Angry 2002 S40 ignition column shear pins

Hi all, I hope you can help me as I've searched the web but can find nothing.

This problem started last Sunday, the car started first time, I drove to church, got out, got back in again an hour later and the key would not go past position two. All the lights on the dash came on as normal.
O I called out the AA, who said the fault was a faulty lock cylinder and sorted me out to get home by removing the ignition switch to allow the car to be started with a screwdriver.
When I got home I removed the steering wheel etc and got the cylinder out and checked, it's ok and not faulty. The faulty is the part the cylinder slips into, which in turn connects to the ignition switch.
When I look at it the wee bit that connects these two is very lose and there's bits of metal rattling around in there. So I went to Volvo and they told me it was the column lock and ordered it for me.

Now the problem, the column lock is held together with two shear pins, how do I remove these? I have read that I should remove the column lock and put it in a vice to chisel out the pins to separate it, but how do I remove the entire column lock? Does it slip off? It moves slightly if I pull it forward.

If anyone has any tips / pictures I'd appreciate them.

can they not be drilled out with LH drill bit, or drill hole and use a stud extractor?

I guess they are shear bolts, so head snaps off on tightening.

just had a look at my breaker, and once covers for steering column removed, theres 4 12mm bolts to drop the steering coloumn, you then need to extract the shear bolts (centre pop, then drill/extractor) then you can get barrel etc off, and drill out the pins to remove key barrel, I can't see how you can get barrel out without removing the lock housing, and doing on a bench.

Well I got the shear pins out, but it was a tough job. I lowered the steering column as far as possible by removing the bolts securing and removing the trim underneath. I tried drilling the shear pins but although they are alloy, they are tough. One turned slightly after I bored a hole in the side and then turned it with a punch and hammer, but it stuck half way. So, because I'd ordered a new part I decided to drill through the side. It took me two hours and 14 broken drill bits to finally cut a slot down the side where the shear pins are, then I used a hammer and chisel to bend the sides of the slit lightly and the whole thing fell off. I then realised why I couldn't remove the whole unit, the steering lock button was in the lock position, the key / cylinder lock had failed leaving it in this position. Anyway, it's off now so hopefully rebuilding will be easy.

I would have drilled using LH drill bits (would slacken it slightly - or even remove bolt if your really lucky), then a fine stud extractor

normal drill bit, is trying to tighten bolt all the time you are applying pressure

On some cars, it is possible to cut a slot in the head of the bolt with a grinder & use a stout screwdriver with some molegrips attached, (or spanner if it has hexagonal on part of the screwdriver shaft) to move it. Don't know if it's possible on volvo's though, not had to get one off yet !

Or using an impact screwdriver first, would be a good idea too.

My uncle, a mechanic for many a year, used to do it with a very sharp centre punch and a hammer. He started by hitting near the edge, square to it to make a decent impression, then tap tap tap at an angle.
