I’ve been surprised to read the negative views of CarPlay on this forum. I had it on my VW Golf GTE and it was incredible. I couldn’t live without it on that car and I’m so thankful whenever I get a rental car that has CarPlay.
I’ve yet to take delivery of my XC60 but I am worried about how odd it’s going to look in landscape mode on a portrait screen. Is there any hope that Apple / Volvo are working on letting CarPlay make better use of the screen? I wonder if that’s why there isn’t a positive view of it on this forum. |

If anyone wants to see the updates from Apple’s side: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2019/252/
It seems like iOS 13 will support dynamic screen sizes so I wonder if we could see an update from Volvo’s side. Do they ever push updates out to Sensus? This is also quite exciting. In theory they could push Waze, Spotify, etc to the digital gauges as well. I really hope we will be able to benefit from these features. |

Volvo's concept of the infotainment is a tablet oriented approach, similar as you see in Teslas for example (Tesla for me is the reference in terms of infotainment and car working with IOT). What was commented here is that the added value of CarPlay within the Volvo's infotainment system is almost none. And if you look to the future plans for infotainment systems, this integration feature of your smartphone will start to be less and less important over time. There will still be a need to have a connectivity between the phone and the car, and maybe services will be shared between a smartphone and the car, but having the phone responsible for an infotainment layer in your car will be a thing of the past.

I saw a video of one of the newer BMW's with the 10,25" wide screen display, and Carplay running in full screen. It looked really good. Especially with the new dashboard function in Carplay, where more information is visible at the same time. |
