Glow Plugs
Recently I have noticed that my car is a little bit smelly (dieselly) on startup and a little bit chuggy when cold. I was aware that of my 5 glow plugs, 3 were knackered, 1 was high resistance and 1 was within resistance limits. Clearly 1 (or more?) of the remaining 2 'working' plugs has thrown in the towel. However the car previously started and drove 100% fine. I did a 'test' removal of my glow plugs on my 2003 V70 D5.....I was concerned that they wouldn't want to come out so I 'cracked' them with an 8mm deep socket and Hey Presto! All 5 come out a piece of the proverbial p!ss. I was expecting all sorts of fun and games after 15 years untouched but, no, they flew out. Got some Beru GN045's ordered from Amazon - £55 for 5, unlike the local dealer who wanted £166 for 5, they graciously offered a discount of 10%! One thing of note is that the plugs are either 4 volts or 11 volts, get it wrong either way and I would expect problems ie a very short plug life or poor starting. To be fair, it is a car that never fails to positively surprise me....in 10 years it has never let me down and only 'wear and tear' items as a rule have needed doing.... Oh dear, I have probably just put the 'kiss of death' on my Volvo (known affectionately as 'Black Thunder')......

Cleaned EGR at weekend (was stinking thick). Pollen filter looked like it could do with shooting - new one fitted. |

Replaced flex hoses and bled brakes on the 2002 V70 which I acquired a couple of months ago. Not sure when brakes were last bled but wow, I've never seen fluid this dark! It was pretty much black.
The front bleeders were both seized. 5 cycles of heat, hammer tapping, penetrant spray, and attempts at loosening finally worked. It really does pay to be patient with these, doesn't it? Thank goodness I had a six sided 11mm closed wrench on hand! I would not attempt loosening front with 12 sided!

V70 going in for a bit of upgrade work tomorrow.
New front lower control arms and ball joints to be installed. Meyle HD drop links all round. New front pads. New engine top mount. Fix issue with airbag warning. Steering lock limiters replaced. Service and re-gas the A/C. Gary

Missing the Volvo coolant ? Their gallon of concentrate is not expensive. Don't forget to also inspect the A/C pulley (may do with at bearing past 120k miles)

Nicely done. This is indeed quite a fight given we are working this much on a single tiny screw! If that was on the front, I would not even try on the rear ones - the bleeder is even thinner and quite more fragile (I snapped one after a long fight). A walk to the breakers should source a used pair of calipers for not much - that would be 1/5th of the job to undo the bleeders. One thing I advice, when fighting and succeeding to remove a bleeder screw, never to put it back in place. As soon as it comes out I replace it with a new one (usually from the main dealer). I've learned this when the old one snapped upon reinserting it.
