Default Whats a good 164 worth these days?

Hello all, please allow me to introduce myself.

Ive grown up with Volvos all my life, mostly 240 GLT estates, so I am quite a fan of these cars,,,,,,,, (sorry to say it all went down hill when I bought an 850 ...) ...... anyway, despite being 10 years or so without a either straight 4 or a straight 6 Volvo, my heart run a little faster when I saw the familiar chrome hubcap and steel wheel of a mid 70's Volvo saloon poking out from under a tarpaulin in a guys garage.

Expecting it to be a either a 144/5 or an early 240 my jaw dropped to find a gleaming "Rolls Shadow esque" 164 hiding shyly under its cover. The guy tell me hes driven 70 miles in it in the last three years and due to his age and health he can no longer enjoy it as he used to.

So, after a little more investigation and whilst trying to hide my excitement I ask him if he'd consider selling it.......... he says simply "yes".....

It appears that these cars are so rare that I have nothing to compare its value against, so what do you think its worth? A complete, running, driving, roadworthy and very presentable 1975 164E injection. RHD and a UK car from new. Five owners and has covered 105k.

There is one listed on carandclassic for £10,250 right now with 41k miles on it so perhaps that gives a vague indication. I think £8k might be a reasonable floor for a non-project?

Of course take my suggestion with a barrel of salt as I'm new to the Volvo world.

I’d work on the basis that the lack of usage will mean some recommissioning costs; good tyres, brake hydraulics, maybe some suspension bushes, change the fluids etc. Probably allow £1k to freshen it up.

I’d be looking really hard at the body shell and the interior. If it is genuinely mint, then I’d suggest £6k would be a reasonable bid; maybe £8k tops. But it really depends how much you want to pay for it and if you see yourself selling it on in the near future.

If it’s got evidence of previous poor repairs (eg patches to get it through the MoT) then I’d be looking at around £1.5k tops if it’s a good runner.

As much as that? I really wasnt expecting that at all.

I dont think its a "P38 sculpture" but ill see if I can get in there and have a closer look at it. I know the guy who owns it and I also know he isnt the type to bodge anything. Hes owned it for 30 or so years and its always been a second vehicle to him so im not expecting it to be bodged......... only a magnet can be the judge of that, however.

Next question then is where would I go if I wanted to sell it? Would anyone here be interested?

So, basically, you want us to advise you how to flip it and fatten up your wallet as much as possible?

well........... without wishing to sound like a shameless profiteer, my view of this vehicle may have been skewed a little having had a chat with you guys today.... I was expecting it to be just a fun practical classic for peanuts. surely if I was that shameless profiteer id have just bought it, photographed it a stuck it on ebay.... but the fact is I havent done any of that.

tomorrow its going to be lashing down, so im going to go and have a good look it with a magnet and a screwdriver....... be prepared for some photos in the next few days......

Have just seen this so forgive my non-immediate reply! I have several 164s, two being on the road and although I don't need to drive much, my show-car is the only car I drive at present. That's because, when retired one can do what one prefers to do - and I really really like driving it and so hate cr#p titchy modern Euroboxes.

I've followed 164 trends for ages now, and as a rough idea of current happenings, there have been two on "carandclassics" since last year, and both at well over £10k. I know both cars - my light blue 164E was photographed next to one of them at Goodwood last year, and appeared in "Driver" recently. I helped exhume the grey one from its slumber about 15 years ago: the paint is good original but the interior isn't!

A recently well-restored maroon one sold last year for about £8k yet was promptly put back up for sale for ~£10k - but didn't sell. A dark blue one appeared after some work then storage last year too: a dealer got it running again but couldn't sell it for under £3k.

What am I trying to say - being very non-fashionable (except to 164-lovers like me) they are only worth what you can get for them. I have never paid more that £2500 for one (yes, Derek, I have bought some....) and the one you describe sounds interesting. By chance did its owner take it to a Volvo rally at Stratford (I think) about 4 years ago? Came in late as he saw the rally by chance - I spoke to owner and took a picture of it.

If you go and see it, ask if you can take a picture of it to paste here, for as they say, a picture saves a thousand words!

Avcent - our replies crossed! Excellent re pics, looking forward to seeing them. However, I doubt you'd need a magnet as rust in the important places is easy to see and difficult to hide. Back of sills where it meets rear wheel arches is a favourite for blisters and worse. Have a look at the spare wheel troughs (as you would if looking at a 240 again......), and where the front panel meets the front wings. If you can, open the boot and see if you can see through the bottom each side (!).

By what you say, the rest sounds pretty good but do an MoT history check in case the floor has been patched. However, from current experience, paint is now becoming as expensive as critical welding nowadays, so it must shine to attract buyers!

Good luck - wish I was with you!

I just popped into a newsagents and spotted a classic car prices magazine. It said £4000 for one in perfect condition!?

Perhaps they're rare enough now that there is no stable market price.
