XC70 about to purchase

Hi I am looking to buy a Xc70 diesel auto early 2007. Could anyone tell me if the DPF causes much of a problem? Are there anythings I should look for when I buy? I do a lot of maintenance myself is there any preventative maintenance I can do?

If used as intended, the DPF is very reliable so the question is more whether your type of driving will cause a problem for the DPF.

Not too many motorways or dual carriageways near Leek from what I remember.

Make sure the awd is working. Get under the car and you should not be able to turn the prop. If you can your looking at an expensive repair. Some
Slight movement is allowed but I mean slight. Lots of other issues also so have a good look round this forum and you will find all you need to know.

As Cheshire has said dpfs on these are reliable and last the life of the car if cared for properly. I have only had one issue with the dpf on my s60 and it wasn't even the dpf at fault but a dodgy sensor with ford written on it which i managed to reset.

Had my 58 plate D5 V70 from new. Did 3 years of commuting 9 miles each way in London traffic (doesn't get much worse). Outbound was always flowing at 30-40 mph (plenty of traffic lights though) as I left very early in the morning. The evening return was always a stop/start slog.

Never had many issues, but I also gave it a once a month blast on the motorway just in case. Over 7 years (and 42k miles) I think the soot filter warning light has come on twice, and cleared quickly after a quick blast.

I do get about a 400 ml of accumulation of diesel in the engine oil over a 12 month (and 4 to 5 k mileage) basis, because of forced DPF regeneration(a very common issue).

I'm not mechanically minded but got under my car to find the DPF. At first I couldn't find it because it is so close to the outlet of the engine exhaust manifold. I'm guessing that's good because it always sees maximum exhaust temperatures possible, given the location.

The diesel dilution is due to failed regenerations not forced.
You're right that it is common in certain circumstances though.

Thanks, I've looking around the forum, my wife now calls herself a forum widow! Not much in the way of motorways where I live but the car will be taken on long runs once or twice a month I also need the AWD as I get bad weather where I live. The car was last serviced at 90,000 miles by Volvo, it now has 99,000 miles so will need a service, am I correct in saying the cam belt needs doing at 108,000 miles?

Yes cambelt is 108k as well as the auxiliary tensioner, idlers and belt. It's these that fail and wrecks people's engines! Only use Volvo parts they can be had for a good price on eBay from Volvo dealers especially if your going to do it yourself so don't take the risk. Check the water pump but it will be fine so leave it alone
