My '92 MR2 used to dink petrol at about that rate. 'Twas designed that way apparently, as letting an amount of oil into the cylinders reduced wear, which is good considering it revved to 7000. Must have worked 'cause a friend of mine had one at 150K and it was still as fast as my 53K and the only work it had was a new clutch at 145K. Do these engines do the same thing?

Stu

PS Look on the bright side, my other car, the Spit, uses it's oil to stop rust under neath :) (and to mark it territory of course :) )

Neither my 240 nor my V70 use any detectable amount of oil, although they are both low miles (60k on the 240 and 28k on the T5)

My Old T5 used to use a drop of oil, and i thought it might have been the "let it settle to it's own level issue", but it just went down and down, like yours!!

In the end I found it was partly due to the oil return pipe on the turbo leaking. This is apparently a common fault, the leak occurs around the seal on the turbo's bearing housing. The oil finds it's way onto the exhaust side of the turbo and is burned away.

Therefore, no drips, no smoke, no oil in the water and no oil deposits in the tailpipe. I repaired the leak, and the consumption was cured. I was informed, as a matter of interest, that it's perfectly normal for a high mileage T5 to use oil between the max and min marks between services, ie:- 1.5 litres to 10,000 miles.

Regards

Nigel

Default Volvo S70 whistling turbo sound at 1800prm / oil consumption

Dear All,

I have a similar problem. The car is a Volvo S70, 1999, B5204T4 engine (5 cilinder, turbo, 20V, 164HP). Mileage is: 270.000 km

I realized two problems:
- slightly high oil consumption: 0,5 Liters / 1000km. According to volvo manual, the oil consumption should be mximum 0,4 Liters / 1000 km. I use 5W-40 full-syn high-mileage Valvoline oil. (The previous oil was ***HS, but with the same oil consumption). Some say, that I have to change to 10W-40, but I don't think so. (Same high temp viscosity)
- for a while I realized a whistling turbo sound when accelerating. It mainly starts at 1800 rpm, when the turbo starts to work. It' not the normal turbo sound, it's higher frequency, annoying sound.

There are no any additional signs, like big fume, big power loss, etc.

Shall I change my turbo?
What do You think?
Thanks in advance: Viktor
