Post S60 R / V70 R Steering Pump Noise

Quick and easy fix if your pump steering is noisy , feels wrong, froth in reservoir. Look inside the Power Steering Reservoir to were the Inlet pipe is and if you see a brass pipe approx 40mm long this is your problem as it should be covered by a "L" shaped plastic pipe. Fish around in the bottom of the reservoir , retrieve it and refit. It is secured by removing the inlet pipe and pushing in the 20mm or so of brass pipe till flush with flange. If this is to fiddly purchase a new reservoir. It is caused by the high pressure from the pump gradually pushing the brass pipe back into the inlet pipe causing the L piece to drop off thus causing the froth which your pump then tries to pump.

Thanks, mine makes the most awful noise on occassions and on checking the fluid has been bubbles, however I seem to loose fluid, top it up and it's Ok for weeks and other times a couple of days, the reservoir itself seems to be covered in the stuff, the car sailed through it's MOT before Christmas, will have a proper look tomorrow as it's starting to thaw

A quick update, I've taken off the bottom hose clip and replaced it with an old fashioned "Jubillee" clip, touch wood it seems to have stopped leaking but will keep you posted
Happy New Year

Great bit of info from the original poster.

Steering on my V70R started making awful groaning noises over the last two weeks and feared the worst till i read this. Symptons exactly as described. Only other bits to add from my experience - removed power steering oil with turkey baster, eventually worked out that the "L" shaped spout was cut away underneath so would fit over the brass pipe. managed to remove inlet hose by using a electrical screwdriver to ease it initially of the reservoirs inlet pipe. tapped brass tube back into the reservoir using a very small hammer and a scrap of wood.

Hey presto!

Dont suppose anyone has any photos of this? my 850 t5 is making the noise now, do you have to take the fluid out of the resevoir?
Thanks

unfortunately no pics taken by me and not sure whether its the same arrangement on the 850 t5. Hopefully someone more knowledgable re the 850 T5 will chip in with a response. My main reason for removing the fluid was so I could see exactly what I was doing, also a lot less messy than sticking my fingers in and out of oil (not sure why I didn't think of the turkey baster idea before, its now a permanent addition to the tool box). Once the fluid was out I could see exactly what Dave 3384 was talking about and his advice made complete sense.

I was having some pump noise, but not all the time. Mostly after some faster driving. The plastic return piece had come off, like previously posted. I had to drain and remove the whole reservoir to figure out how to get it back into place - before pushing the brass tube back in. Mine had slid out almost a half an inch.

Here's some pictures to help others.

BTW, this was on a 2004 V70r.

Just got a C70 with this symptom, had a look and I'm missing the piece too, got some froth in the fluid also,

one question -does the l shaped plastic bit need to point downwards into the reservoir? I'm assuming it should.

Also, is it just a case of getting some fluid out with a turkey baster, placing it in a clean jug, then tipping it back in after the jobs done??
