You'll be replacing the one that you fitted in no time. The reservoir I changed the other week was well and truly wedged in below the coolant reservoir, but an 8mm flat screwdriver popped under the locking tab that holds the top of the PAS and coolant reservoirs was all that was needed to separate them. They wouldn't separate any other way. 4C I will get you the correct part number, as Volvo will try to supply you with the old reservoir in what I suspect is a ploy to deplete their stocks of them.
Volvo changed the design of the reservoirs for a reason. The old reservoirs allow air to enter the system when turning because of the design of the pipe inside it as well as the high level fluid return. The new reservoirs don't allow this to happen, so you don't get anywhere near as much ingress of air into the system. Edit - PAS fluid reservoir post facelift part number is 30645621. The old one is 30665496.

Dancake,
Phoned Volvo parts deptartment today to order a new PS resorvoir and as expected they came back with the early PN, so i then asked for a 2006 PN and indeed it was the PN you suggested. Just to clarify, i have a 2004 and i need a new PS resorvoir, the one i should be fiitting is the later 'improved' type,,,PN 30645621, not the one for my year, PN 30665496. No other parts needed.. Thats correct yes? Last edited by 4candles; Dec 7th, 2015 at 19:35. |

See post #326 on the link below. It describes my experience of replacing the old type reservoir with the new type one. You are correct with regards the part numbers. You need the later one (30645621).

Thanks Dan,
I see yours is the D5, i have the B5254T2 so i hope i don't have any issues other than the ones you outlined. Btw, Dealer wants £42 for it and i can't recall if that was plus the dreaded! Last edited by 4candles; Dec 7th, 2015 at 21:11. |

Got mine from FRF Volvo for £38 posted. Reckon the setup on your engine will be very similar to that of the D5. You should be grand.

no fool like an old fool...
Well after enquiring with Volvo regarding the price for a new PS resorvoir, i dilly dallied on actually ordering it as i hate spending money unneccessarily, electing to leave it until this weekend to at least do some basic investigation into why my steering was heavy and loudly whining when parking etc....
Well this is just a lesson to me and everyone else not to presume your problem is automatically the same as someone elses, get of ones (me) idle behind, go outside into the cold, lift the bonnet and waggle/twist the hoses to check for tightness like you (i) should have done earlier! So simple, so easy and Voila, the low pressure rubber hose at pump was remarkably loose, 30 seconds with a screwdriver and my steering is brand new and buttery, noise has completely gone, obviously the pump was ingesting air which they don't like. Anyway, glad it wasn't serious and feel a bit of a fool for pontificating as to the why's and wherefores of the problem before actually physically eliminating such a basic check. Back insde to the fire now, that £50 note will live to fight another day! 4c. Last edited by 4candles; Dec 12th, 2015 at 16:15. |
