Default V70R 2004 Buying Guide??

Hi everyone.

I have been gone for five years, I was a previous owner of two T5 855's and then a 855R, before falling victim to Ford and BMW.

But looks like I am back, yesterday I paid a £250 deposit to hold a 1 owner 2004 V70R AWD. It looks like a cracker in the pictures I was sent, it has just broke 100k and has twelve service stamps all main dealer. Sadly an auto, but with so many stamps I hope the Tranny Oil has been changed. Thought it was too good a looking and sounding motor to pass up, so paid the deposit and go to collect on Sat coming. It's 150miles away.

So can you offer what I should be looking, I am happy with the engine side of things, but what else should I be looking at for signs of big bills looming? The car comes with 6 Months RAC warranty on all major mechanicals. Any help would be much appreciated, I did look for a buying guide but could not find in four attempts..

At the mileage you say 1st thing to check is the awd system to make sure it works as should. IIRC if you crawl underneath you should NOT be able to turn the propshaft, but a fraction of movement is ok. When driving listen for any strange noise which could indicate a problem. I don't think Volvo change gearbox fluid. They claim its a sealed for life unit....RUBBISH check the auto box changes as it should with no bangs/thumps when changing. Search on here about how to "change fluid ". The 4C (variable) suspension is another expensive bit to change if they go bad - struts can leak. Also check the front wishbone rubbers, they are a known issue as are the drop links.

If you do get a good un, (like mine) they are a brill permanent smile maker, and in the snow on snow tyres are almost unstoppable unless you go really silly.

There is a USA site V70R.com which has oceans of info, but at the moment it is not displaying correctly - at least on my computer.

One final piece of advice, as you appear to say you're happy with spanners in your hand, I'd look to invest in a DICE/VIDA set up They really do take the guess work out of finding faults/causes when things go wrong.

PS One final "must do" if you do buy the car is remove the "rat catcher" - located mid-ships straddling the exhaust and propshaft. Failure to comply could cost you £1000+ Google it and search on here - I put picture up showing damage after I thought "never happen to me"

Good advice, bought my XC and it could have turned out to be 2wd such was my lack of knowledge, also the atrocious weather did not permit crawing on the deck, a good boot from standstill on some marbles or snow will validate whether the AWD works if you don't like crawling...

Btw mine is working, rarely a chirp of the tyres with my 210hp.
