Default Oil leak

Hi all . I'm new to Volvo ownership , I've just bought a 2005 xc70 d5 auto , I think the rear crankshaft oil seal is leaking !! OOPS . Has anyone done one ? Is it easier to remove gearbox to reach it or remove the engine ? Hoping someone will answer , Thanks

Does the gearbox not have to be removed in order to facilitate engine removal?

Thanks for a fast reply , I'm not sure the best way to tackle it . if gearbox has to come out to remove engine I wouldn't have to take the engine out then

It could either be the rear crankshaft seal, or the core plug. Not sure if your year of car suffered with the core plug popping out issue, but it would be wise to buy a core plug and a crankshaft seal just incase. That is unless you can remove the box and leave it off for a couple of days until you get a replacement seal or plug.

Have a look in the xc90 section, one guy removed his engine in his back garden for the same fault. Just unbolted and lifted out leaving running gear in place. His car a xc90 d5 auto sharing the same awd system. That's the way I would
