It’s just the connections to the speed sensor in the diff- read this page, really useful instructions about how the speedo gets the signal and how to fake a signal with a 12v AC power supply if you’re chasing an issue with the speedo in the dash.

Cheers

Thanks,

He calls it "tamper proof", is it illegal to open it?

If you really want to get into it without destroying it get a sharp blade (craft knife) and cut the top 1mm all around the box, have a look inside and when done superglue your "new" lid back on.

It might be an early canbus type box, the wires that connect to the clocks might not be the ones it left the factory with, it's possible this has been added later and the original wires snipped back and then connected to the box.

Even kill people with it?

Anything that tampers with the odometer is illegal. Doubt anyone would know, though.

I suppose that box was made tamperproof since you could have disconnected the sensor for the speedo there, meaning that the odometer didn’t increase- although the speedo wouldn’t work either. Obviously enough that would be relevant when the car was new, much less so now. There’s a tamperproof connector onto the back of the speedo in the instrument cluster for the same reason.

Neither the tamperproof connector on the back of the speedo nor the box on the sensor wires are there on my car anymore, after I chased a speedo fault a few years ago.

Cheers

Yep, that’s the one. Removing it usually breaks it (which is of course the point).
