oil pump and PAS failure!?!?!
Hi guys, after looking close to completion looks like my 940 is still mechanically incomplete!
thanks for all replies to my last posts about the project, anyway... my oil pressure problem persists, since replacing the switch i have had a full oil change to thicker oil accompanied by a fortifying additive, but it still stays on, does this mean my only option is to replace the pump, is it doing any damage - the warning is only on at idle. im am approx 200rpm away from the light being off on idle and i remember my friends classic mini being able to turn a screw on it and increase idle revs. obviosuly the volvo has an ECU could this be remapped if so where and at what cost!?!? is this a silly suggestion? secondly whenever revs are low (AGAIN) as in doing a 'dry' turn or any slow parking manouvers my steering intermitently goes hard or in otherwords stops being power assisted, it must either be the pump or the rack. help? both pumps are expensive new - does anyone have them for sale or know part numbers for a volvo 940 b200F estate 1991 this is a setback, since cleaning the idel control valve i thought i could get back to the final cosmetics... oh well hope to hear something soon!!! |

RE: oil pump and PAS failure!?!?!
I have in the past rebuilt the oil pumps. you should be able to get a repair kit from your local motor factor. By the sounds of your problem it would be best to do this ASAP before things get worse and you end needing to replace the engine.

RE: oil pump and PAS failure!?!?!
Re PAS - I assume that the belts are correctly tensioned and fluid at correct level. If both OK could be either rack or pump. I'd check condition of rack for signs of wear first. If its done 150,000 or so likely to being heading towards need overhaul - racks available through Euro Car Parts. Could also be pump - I recently had similair problem on my 240 and changing rack despite wear didn't cure - secondhand pump did. So if necessary try breakers for pump.

RE: oil pump and PAS failure!?!?!
Had same intermitent PAS symptoms on my 940S saloon. Problem turned out to be the pump was about to fall off causing the belt to slip. Nice, easy (not to mention cheap) fix ;)

RE: oil pump and PAS failure!?!?!
Am I the only person to find the PAS pump very noisy? I have had 4 940s now and 3 of them have had very noisy pumps? Can they be silenced or is replacement the only (expensive) option? Most people may not notice as it is masked by the swishing of the viscous coupling on the fan - but mine have all been converted to (or had as standard) electric fans.

RE: oil pump and PAS failure!?!?!
You cannot hear mine being noisy. I have removed the viscous fan and converted to electric from a 960. So far the fan has not been needed in a mixture of local and short journeys (up to about 50 miles so far). As far as I know my pump is original and has covered some 160,000 miles plus. Have you checked that the belt is not bottoming in the pulley? Remedy for this is to use a wider belt, say 11 or 12 mm wide. I think that the OEM belts are this wide. All the best, Peter. |

Thanks for advice - will try a new belt, although the one on my saloon has only done 40,000 miles and is still the original item. Anything to avoid forking out £150 for an exchange pump!
