Default Air guide in 960

Hello!
The other day I was in the driveway and suddenly a flapping noice started. I saw a black piece underneath the 960 motor, and very easily I managed to get it out. I researched a bit and it was the Air guide. It is really necessary?

Thank you!

It's tempting to bin under-shields and the like, especially when this happens. But these cars were built before the bean-counters usurped the engineers, and Volvo put that air guide there for a reason.

The engine under tray on my car came adrift, thanks to the bolt holes breaking up. I did think about simply leaving it off, but I found that with a bit of ingenuity, some metal snipped from an old biscuit tin, and a couple of pop-rivets, I was able to fix the broken section and put it all back.

If that part on your car is described as an air guide, and it's directly under the radiator then I'd hazard a guess that it's there to aid cooling.

I'd counsel in favour of fixing it and putting it back.
