It should cut in if the temp goes over 3/4. Since I replaced the rad on mine it goes up very quick while idling and the fan cuts in after 10 mins or so. Dont take my word as written im not sure mines doing what its supposed to.

I guess that if your fan isnt working, it would just overheat on a hot day. I would try idling with a hot engine, cover the grille and seeing how long it takes for the fan to cut in or put the fan switch in some boiling water and trigger it that way?

Having now done a few hundred miles with the new stat, (poor ol 440 IS the daily driver), it does now seems that the "normal" is at about 3/4.

Of course, the heater now blows bloomin hot.............just when I don't need it, but also means that it blows cold without overheating!

In many ways I still love the 440 the best of my three, it is like a faithful Labrador - takes no looking after other than regular use, and make ya smile every time.

Sorted.

Ha ha!

Don't mean to tempt fate here...

But ironically, the most reliable from my fleet, consisting of: (deep breath)

960 D24, S80 T6, 2.0 480, 480 Turbo and 460 Turbo is...

The 2.0 480!

It's done 154k now, WAY more than most 400s get to and all it's ever asked for is a new back box and a cable broke on the injector harness causing an intermittent misfire.

So, the most unreliable Volvo ever made, has turned out to be the most bullet proof for me!

It'll explode on my way home now.

Guaranteed!

if not having enough cabin heat is caused by the thermostat, then it's because the thermostat doesn't fully close at any time. at that point, it stays continuously slightly open, which means the coolant circulates continuously through the radiator, therefore the coolant never reaches the normal operating temperature. the easy way to check for a thermostat that doesn't fully close is to start the engine from cold, let it idle for 2 minutes then check the upper radiator hose. the hose should be cold to the touch. if the hose is warm, it is because the thermostat doesn't fully close.

I had this type of issue, it was due to a small water leak, there was enough water for the engine but the heater matrix didnt get that much water hence the car did not warm up. Dont know if that will help?
