440 wont start
hello everyone, I have just joined ,(newbie) needed an alternator for my 440 gl. Found one , in a 440se, the guy said I could have the whole car, it was in good condition so I bought it, cheap. Apparently people and mechanics prior to me had no luck starting it, so thought I'd have a go, all I know is it was supposed to have had a new head put on, and then wouldn't go, so I am going to put up some photos and video in the hope someone may know what my problem is, oh, just to let you know I can do most mechanical things, but am totally hopeless when it comes to the electrics. Unfortunately I am unable to upload the photo of the timing mark through the peep hole in the bell housing, its at the 1st line of the bottom 2,

Are you getting fuel and spark?
If so, the crank could be 180° out? Steve

Certainly does sound a little wrong, especially in the second video.
Sounds a little like there may be some piston/valve contact. If you take the plugs out, does it turn freely by hand? Steve

hi Steve, had a go at it again today, yes have spark and fuel, and it is relatively easy to turn with the plugs out. it tightens up a little but nothing major I don't think, it wants to go, but just wont, maybe I have done timing wrong??, I followed the manual, so I figured it would be right, but am open to suggestions, because I am running out of ideas. also is there an easy way of checking if the fuel injectors are working properly?? curiosity really.

When the timing mark on the camwheel is facing upwards, is there a timing mark on the bell housing peeping through the inspection hole? What about the crankshaft wheel at the bottom of the engine? Is that skywards too? (not meaning to teach you how to suck eggs, but sometimes these things have to be asked)
It sounds as though something is blocking the engine from starting in that second video...have the spark leads been changed? Have you looked at the codes on the Obd if its equipped (little black box on the passenger wing under the bonnet) mine has a knock sensor and did similar when that was playing up...

hello Anadinolin, cam timing mark is up, timing mark in peep hole on bell housing is just a bit above the bottom 2 lines, and the timing mark on the crank pulley is a little to the left of bottom. and no, I haven't checked the obd as yet, I checked plug leads today and had spark to all plugs,( although I may get new ones just to be safe)

still no closer to winning, wont be back on it for a while due to work and family issues, I tried the on board diagnostics, and got 3 single flashes, which is no fault found, that was good. so until I can work on the beast again cheers to all. I will post again on progress in the future, probably a few weeks or so I'd say.

had another try today, ended up burning out the starter, and then noticed oil coming out of #3 cylinder, so looks like a rebuild or I may just strip it and sell parts, or the whole thing, so needless to say there will be no more progress updates as far as I can see for quite a long time. I would like to thank you all for your assistance, I really appreciated it, THANK YOU ALL. cheers.
