volvo 440 glt new owner questions.

hi everyone,
Recently a friend of mine bought a Volvo 440 GLT with the 1.7 102hp engine.
Its fine but.....its slow.
He was wondering what can be done to that engine or ultimately swap it for a better engine.

what mods can i do to the 1.7 to make it more powerfull.
Where he lives there are lots of hills so its up all the time.
he just wants more power.

buy a fuel injected version or a turbo, these cars have very low value and arent worth souping up

He has just bought it but he already likes it a lot.
Does the turbo engine bolt straight in with no mods?
or is the same thing turboing the NA version?

The turbo engine is based on the same block, but with major internal differences like pistons and head design etc.

A swap can be done and physically bolt into place, but it would also need the wiring loom and ECUs from a donor too

Power wise, the standard turbo lump produced 120bhp when new with some more torque, which is pretty poo really.

However...

The story goes that Volvo sent the little Renault lump to Porsche for them to design a turbo sytem and have a fiddle with.
Porsche then posted the engine back to Holland with a turbo bolted to the side and producing around 180-190bhp.
Volvo then decided that would be far too much fun and detuned it to 120bhp, much more sensible!
There have been a couple of types of modified ECU developed over the years, namely the Richmod and Roboumod, that get the power back up to broadly the same sort of power that Porsche intended!

Maybe have a mooch around the 480 Forums as they use the same running gear.

when you say that i will need the wiring from the turbo.to make it work with the non turbo car do i need to join the 2 wirings?

In general terms, its easier to take all the wiring from the turbo engine, including ecu, fuse boxes etc. Some of it you may have to join together. Lights, dials on the dash that kind of thing.

It should not feel sluggish and should spin the wheels in 2nd. Basically, start with a good service and after then, see how many horses have escaped, through wear...
