Thanks for the insight, I'm mostly with you, that's why I think you don't mean my post with your answer.

That's what I was saying in the beginning, it is the way, dealerships work today. That's why I advised against the idea from Clan:

What I would love to see is something different (see under the next quote), what I'm expecting is exactly that. Parts get changed. So my recommendation was to NOT go to a dealer, as this would be highly likely to end like we both say: changed parts.....

It is the same with electronics. Do you expect them to have microscopes, electronic repair capabilities, and all the surface mount components to repair and test a circuit board?

In today's world, such an expectation that a vehicle dealer / service center does component-level repair of electronics is simply unrealistic.
Totally right, exactly what I'm saying. What I would like to see from a good dealership, especially if we are talking about older cars (10+), is that they know a specialised shop, that can do these repairs. I don't expect them to do it by themself.
But nevertheless, as long as it is that way, I would NOT recommend to bring this car, in this situation, to a dealer and let them diagnose. I'd diagnose myself and then search for a specialised shop, who can do that kind of repair.

That's what I was saying in the beginning, and yep, I am serious about this. It doesn't make any sense, to bring that car to a dealer for a diagnose.

Tony500,

I am very interested to hear what you find here as I seem to have the exact same problem. XC90 2005 AWD.
No power to the ICM (purple wire) - Every now and then (but happening less often) stereo just bursts into life. I could be after driving for 30 mins or over an hour, sometimes it never comes on...
My ICM was originally refurbed by Volvo Diagnostics (great service) for a different fault so I returned it under the warranty and this time there was 'no fault found'.
After some investigation I am starting to suspect an issue at the CEM, maybe a relay issue, so will no doubt end up removing it and cleaning connections in the first instance.
Something strange did occur at the weekend though, maybe related maybe not.... we stopped at some traffic lights and the RPM shot up. Had to switch ignition off and on again.

To see if it's the relay... Take a 12v positive feed and put a fuse on it to be safe and connect it to the purple wire that goes into the ICM. If it works it would be the relay.

I used a fused tap and plugged I to the original fuse under the ECM. Took that up to behind the stereo and got a ground wire up and installed my own relay.

I'm not a spark so may get some helpful negative / positive from a auto spark or someone in that game.

Hope you understand what I done and hope it helped as there isn't much on the forum.

The Violet feed wire comes from Fuse 5 in the CEM ... it also directly feeds all the other audio system modules , the violet wires are all linked together , might be worth seeing if they are live ..

The CEM is known for water getting in on the 2005 - 7 models ...
