General - whats happening?

when you pull the dipstick on a 740 d24t and there is some whitish thing puffing out dont know how to discribe it. what is going on or is it a sign of something?

One possibility is that it is pressurising of the crankcase which can result from bad valve seals or defective rings or cylinders allowing 'blow by'. Placing your hand over the oil filler hole is supposed to give an idea of whether or not there is blow by.
