Default D4192T and the M56 gearbox

The later model S/V40 D4192T4/3 (102/115bhp) engine block is supposedly the same block as the earlier D4192T but the T4/3 engine is fitted with the M56 (Volvo) box unlike the earlier cars fitted with the M5D (Renault) box.

So, what I'd like to know is:

1) Is it possible to fit the M56 gearbox to the D4192T block?
2) Will the D4192T (90bhp) engine be able to power the gearing ratios of the M56?

Any advice welcome...

1 , yes
2 , probably not as efficient as it could be , ie over geared as you have far less torque .
This would give the impression of a lazy engine and feel like it has even less torque . You might have to change down to go up a hill .. you can compare final drive ratios and gear ratios see what the differences are ..

Thanks Clan,

I sometimes need to do this anyway. I've noticed that it doesn't like low revs and high gears. If it's sitting in 5th and the road speed drops below 45ish mph it starts to labour some

Will do some comparisons and post up my findings.

Cheers...

I had sourced a damaged S40 1.9D (115bhp) to do a complete engine/gearbox transplant but it was sold before I could collect it. I then thought I had a 2.0T V40 with engine failure but it turned out to be automatic gearbox. The search continues...

In regard to the ratios:

M5D - - - - - - - M56L2
D4194T - - - - - B4194T

1st:
3.73:1 - - - - - - 3.39:1
2nd:
2.05:1 - - - - - - 1.91:1
3rd
1.32:1 - - - - - - 1.19:1
4th
0.97:1 - - - - - - 0.87:1
5th:
0.76:1 - - - - - - 0.65:1
Reverse:
3.55:1 - - - - - - 3.18:1
Final drive:
3.44:1 - - - - - - 4.25:1

Now if only I knew what those figures truly represent? Clan?

You need to compare the ratios of the D419T Renaullt gearbox with the D419T3/4 Volvo gearbox rather than the T4 ..

Those you listed are very different , the T4 designed to use the rpm of the petrol engine and the s40 diesel designed to keep rpm low using the torque of the engine .
for example if you used the T4 gearbox in the s40 Diesel it would be revving far higher than necessary and ruin the characteristics and use more fuel so no point at all .

Ah yes, thanks for putting it into perspective.

Also, is the D4192T engine fitted with the dual mass flywheel?

I'm thinking it may be best to do a complete engine & gearbox transplant...or just replace my TD with the later car.
