2002 v70 D5 problems - help!
Hi everyone,
I bought a secondhand 2002 D5 V70 at the weekend - family life here i come. I drove the car for two hours on a test drive and all seemed fine, apart from the usual wear and tear for 155000miles. It had a full service history and all seemed well. As i drove back to pick up my wife and drive back to germany (out here with Army) it stuttered and momentarily cut out. the warning lights all came on as if the ignition key had just been turned on. half a second later all as was fine the engine running fine and the engine management light stayed on for a second longer then went out. After that the car returns to being fine, sometimes for two hours, sometimes onl for a minute. The second-hand dealer is of course saying it hasn't done it before, and to his credit it didn't on the extended test drive. On the way back to Germany it happened another five or six times at completely irregular intervals. I took it to the local dealer and they've picked up a fault code. they didn't have time to check it out in detail but they had a quick look at the fuel filter to see if its been changed recently, which it had. The secondhand dealer, when i purchased the car, said he'd honour it for three months, however i can see problems on the horizon because i'm in germany. Has anyone had problems like this before? My intitial thoughts are: Wiring problem - possibly ECU (a cause for concern asnormally take an age to diagnose) Fuel - dirty batch or injector/pump problems? Blocked filter? Hi all,
I'm know I'm new, but thought someone might have some views, still having problems with the car - anyone any ideas? I took it to the local german Volvo dealer. Surprise, surprise it was ok for the 30km (probably more like 5minutes) test drive. I asked them to use it as much as possible and keep it for another day but they seem pretty disinterested. I'm travelling back to UK from Germany this week and will have to use the car. Does anyone know a good specialist in the Exeter/Plymouth area as that is where my family are based. Does anyone have any ideas - please help? Neil |

after that mileage i would change the tank pump assembly anyway . it will fail sooner or later even if its not causing this problem right now . also go for another new fuel filter , one batch of dirty fuel can ruin a fresh filter ...

could be a high speed can network issue, very hard to find with a fault code reader as sometimes comes on then goes off on restart.

Thanks for the reply, excuse my ignorance, but what is a high speed can network issue? Would a fuel filter cause it to be that intermittent, or would it happen all the time?

Maybe a bit back to basics, but is there maybe a grounding/electrical circuit problem? I (well not me actually, rather my car) once had a negative battery lead that had a poor connection, which led to the electrical system cutting out, but not enough to completely die. I did lead to some spooky behavior: erratically running engine, disco effects on the headlights and wobbly speed indicator.
Trouble is that troubleshooting this was fairly obvious; the lead was clearly loose and sparkly and needed tightening. If there's a grounding problem in your car, you'll have to find and check all ground connections, which is a bit of a pain... |

High speed can network or called something similar is the computer network all the main components are connected with such as abs ecu traction etc. Mine throws up brake failure and electrical errors some of the time when I turn off and reset some go away others need a bit longer for the ecu to shut down and then they clear with very little evidence on a download it took 3 or 4 attempts and reads for my local indy to work out what the fault was now it is a matter of time to find out where on the network it is. Hope that helps.

D5 juddering on starting known to Volvo
I have had this problem - every 10 days or so the car judders violently on starting, Volvo have acknowledged that this exists but says it is a "characteristic" of the engine - they say in some circumstances the ECU has not had time to kick in before the engine fires, turn off and hold key for longer!!!).
In 30,000 miles (XC90 D5) I have had the engine mountings replaced twice- it MUST be damaging other components also. Last edited by Peterad; Aug 1st, 2009 at 09:01. |
