(although, to be fair, they did give me my money back...)

That's interesting. The 'ultimate internal wastegate' which we got for Ryan's car was a really neat design (and it seriously works!), but to be fair, the finish/fabrication was a bit amateur on it.

cheers

The compressor tries to stall, which puts a massive load on the turbo shaft...wearing the bearings faster, and potentially resulting in a snapped shaft (seen a couple like this).

thanks James and Ross, i dont know how to quote 2 posts, so i chose the first reply to my question as the quote.

cheers for enlightening me.
my very limited knowledge is slowly growing.

edit.. while im at it, is impeller chatter due to a malfunctioning recirc valve on a T5 bad news then and will wear the turbo shaft/bearings prematurely ?

Hi Wayne,

If the re-circ valve is staying closed when accelerator is depressed, or if the recirc is of diaphram type and has a hole in it, then yes, you'd likely get the noise.

I've never known it cause any problems to the turbo's, however weary when it comes to the GT range of Garrett turbo's because the core is narrower, and even though i am not a fan of dump valves, the recommendation would be to fit a dump valve.

cheers mikey, just pressed the thanks button, its dissapeared and its not shown any thanks ???

it was just a information gathering question really as my phase 1 T5 with a 15g had the chattering noise and when i transfered the turbo/cat
(after mashing the internals out of the cat) onto my phase 2 T5 it became apparent that the chatter was down to a recirc valve split diaphram ,as you mentioned, and i was just curious as to weather or not i was running my phase 2 around with a partially damaged p1 turbo.

many thanks,wayne

Hi Wayne,

The Thanks is now showing, thanks lol.

I used to run a T3.48 at 1bar and a T34.48 at 20psi on a cosworth with no dump valve, and my brother ran a T04B at 30psi without a dump valve, all were and still are fine with their new owners

Had an early 850 t5 with just a T28 down at swautos today for a custom map, wont go into to many details but finshed with for the time being a strong 290bhp @ the flywheel and ~330 ft/lb's @ 1.1 bar.

good spool up, and able to produce high flow rates (hold boost). would definately consider as a replacement for the TD04 turbos.

The owner may make the 7 hour return trip for some more tuning but tbh i think he was more than happy enough with it, especially as it only showed 200 bhp when it arived due to poor setup.
