Default Transmission Changed

Ok here is my question, I viewed a 2006 XC90 today the seller has changed the transmission.. but the car is stuck in 3rd gear ,also cannot be driven in manual.
What could be the possible cause of this??
I do have Volvo Vida so a few pointers would be a great help..
Kind regards

Default Could be anything - probably expensive

Could be anything, likely expensive.
Suggest walk away unless seller is actually giving the car away or wants less than the sum of its parts.
The diagnosis and fix could be more expensive than the car, unless you are lucky.

The problem is that the GM transmission in the T6 XC90 was not up to the power output and hence so unreliable that there will be cars around that have had the gearbox out for repair and refurbishment 2 or 3 times now. Hence the chances of you picking one up with a sound, fully working gearbox that will last a while are getting lower by the year.

The other issue is the transmission was modified by Volvo for that car and AWD so there are no other donor vehicles that could provide parts. I'm not sure if brand new gearboxes are still available but if they are they will likely cost much more than the car is going to be worth anyway.

So unless you are a gearbox specialist looking for a project - proceed with caution. It's important to note that the T6 was the only engine variant which had that gearbox. The later 3.2 (inline 6) and 4.4 (V8) used a Aisin Warner unit which is reliable.
