Thanks for the information, really useful to read about your experience with these. Given that I've already bought the thing I will persevere in getting it working but if I reach a dead-end (and I suspect I might!) I will be in touch for a VCX tool. I'll keep you posted.

The reason the failure rate is so high is because they never test them on a Volvo or a laptop or indeed anything before sending out. They come factory sealed from the production line which in turn has the business model that the end user is quality control.

If there is a problem, you get one email reply a day in broken English while they delay you for a week before finally allowing the return of the dead Dice for a refund, minus postage costs so you're out of pocket.

Some of the Dice faults are very subtle so unless you know exactly what you're looking for, you may never find the fault until you need to do a more in depth interrogation of the car's modules. A Dice reading your car details is not guaranteed working Dice.

Are you saying that obd2home have now changed and you're guaranteeing fellow members that they will receive a working Dice from them?

Or are you saying that you bought one Dice and it was OK but others may still receive a plastic paperweight?

Also, how can you recommend them when you still needed to get reliable software elsewhere?

Thanks for your considered post; I'm sure others will take your comments into consideration when they come to making a decision as to where they will purchase theirs from.

As for your series of questions, me thinks you knew their answer prior to asking them.

You've recommended a seller whose software you don't trust "for the benefit of others."
It's not unreasonable to ask for further clarification as I genuinely don't know the answer.

It's a bit like saying, "buy a car from this dealer but I wouldn't trust them for servicing." People will ask why?

Matter of fact I have, and would again in future, recommend people buy a Volvo from the dealer I purchased my cars from but I certainly would not recommend taking any Volvo to them for service or repair.

Just to follow up on the VIDA installation; I managed to get the VIDA 2014D software from https://volvodiag.com up and running and it's work of sorts and appears to be a more up to date version of VIDA than shipped with my DICE unit. I still have the intermittent communications drop outs but this seems stable enough to use for now. I'm 90% sure this fault is linked to the DICE unit and probably not the software or laptop hardware. I stuck the charger on the battery with ignition in position II as per the VIDA instruction manual which stabilized things as I explored VIDA. Having the car sit in this mode without the engine spinning seems to be pretty sore on the battery.

You'll flatten a battery pretty quickly so I always have the engine running unless the specific function requires it off.

I recently purchased a VCX NANO and I've been able to get it working with VIDA on an old Win 7 laptop but it appears that I will have to go online every 60 days to renew the VCX driver licence. Is this right? I was hoping that once I got the system up and running I could disable the WiFi to ensure it wasn't nobbled by a Windows update.

Nothing to worry about provided the system was fully updated before installing Vida.
There haven't been updates of any note that could scupper Vida and there won't be any in the future either as W7 support ended in January.

Thanks. I'm still a bit annoyed about having to periodically re-license the VX NANO as there was no mention of this when I purchased it. Is it the same with the DiCE clones, or do those just keep on working once they are set up?

Dice don't have a licence and certainly all of the VCX which I sell come with a 10 year licence so speak with your seller.
They really should be providing you with everything you need.
