Not really sure what your options are if you don't want tow bar or roof. Back in the day (early 90s), we used a bike carrier on my fathers classic Range Rover. It had a series of straps with hooks on the end with you'd hood into the panel gap of the boot closure. It worked, but if they still exist I wouldn't personally like to try and put one on my XC90. I think you'd also struggle as the gaps are so much thinner these days! Also, once fitted you have no chance of accessing the boot.

If you plan to use it a lot, I would seriously consider fitting a tow bar and getting a tow bar mounted Volvo/Thule rack. It might not be the cheapest option, but they are brilliant. Easy to take on and off, easy to put the bikes on and off, not going to damage your car and you can tilt them still to access the boot. But I can understand cost prohibitive if you don't already have the tow bar and don't want to use it a lot.

Can't make personal recommendations,(which is what you were looking for) but the boot mounted ones that familymangreg discusses are widely available, from Halfords etc. A reputable company like Thule do them, so I wouldn't worry too much about it, if is says it's compatible, and suits your needs, but presumably you need to be careful on install.

Thule have a compatibility checker, if that is what concerns you.

Evans Cycles have a few available, with a good number of customer reviews for the carriers, if you want a little more info.

The cheap £40 one, gets better reviews than the £140 Thule one. So take from that what you wish.

What is the tailgate made from? On the MK1 its a plastic moulding and you cant strap bike racks to it.
