Default Humming noise from rear on electric when turning

Hi all

When running on electric only, the rear wheels are of course silent. But if I’m turning at a slowish pace then the rear wheels emit what can only be described as a middle pitched humming noise.

Stops as soon as wheels are straight again.

Is this normal please? Is it just the ERAD working harder or something?

Cheers.

For anyone who comes across this in the future. Apparently the ERAD is supposed to make that noise when turning...

I had just started to notice the noise you are experiencing on my XC60 PE too and was wondering if it is something to mention to the dealer at its first service (due later this month).
I'm almost 100% sure the noise wasnt there when I first got the car.
Although Volvo USA are saying its 'Normal', I think I will get my dealer to have a look at it while its in the workshop, at least I will have it on record now if it does get worse in the future.

Yes good plan mate. Mine won’t be serviced until July but would definitely appreciate it if you let us know what their response is.

I’m also doubting whether the noise was there when I first got the car. But then again I probably wasn’t tuned in to it like I am now.

But as you say definitely worth making sure they record it as reported.

So, as is always the case, my car decided to stop making the annoying noise on the day it goes into the dealership for its first service 🤷*♂️ As such, could not replicate the fault 🤦*♂️
I wonder if its a temperature related issue as the temperatures here were very cold today, much colder than its been so far this year. Will keep an ear out for it and when it reappears, I will try and get it back to be looked at.
Thankfully, they sorted out all of the other issues I raised with them so they did a good job.

That’s interesting it does it 100% of the time for me when slow speed, turning with a bit of load (ideally slightly uphill). Not sure I can be bothered to go to the dealership myself for it until service next year!

The rattling coming from the intellisafe system however could indeed drive me up the wall....

It’s gone from a rattle to now sounding like a marble is being thrown around in there. Okay that’s useful thanks and I’ll let you know if I do go down there and anything comes of the humming rear wheels !

Can I ask if anything came of the humming rear wheels? I have an MY21.5 XC60 T8 with 1,500 miles on the clock. When it was hot this week and at low speed driving round a car park and turning I got a mid-range frequency humming noise when I cornered. It was sort of a “whooooom” noise coming from the ERAD.

Is this normal or did you subsequently have issues?

Many thanks!

Apparently it’s normal. My car still does it when turning low speeds when electric only. No issues experienced.
