Leasing and finance deals mean that going new can be cheaper.

I mean citroen c1 and similar size are about 100 ish a month, something larger and quicker m140i is about 280, 5 series size cars in the late 300's to 400's. Most of the big manufacturers love to shift new metal.

The other thing from the big three premium bunch is that holding their value still slightly better means on lease they can work out more cost effective. That is before discounts most BMW dealers will give you 20% discount ish on models that have been on sale for only a few months or for m models about a year (initial deals tend to be worse).

Yup, we bought our daughter a year old Kia picanto with a few thousand miles on it for less than 140 a month. No brained for peace of mind, although she really wants a Nissan Figaro!!

I'm almost always in the oldest car on the roads when I go out! The 740 is 1988 vintage, still does everything a modern car does but looks much better doing it!
That's my newest car too, the others are from 84, 74 and 73 but they're admittedly used as toys now.

The Volvo is easily up to the job of daily use year round so why would I want to change it? I hate modern cars anyway.

Aye a funny old world soon the roads will be littered with new boring cars that technically no-one owns, as they are all leased and the adverts always confirm 'you will not own the vehicle!' I have a mate from school days who has never owned a car and after 18 years is only just realising that forking out £350 a month on a car that is rarely out of the dealer for recals and service's.

Our 1998 R-reg S70 (200,000 miles and counting) did the September university run, fully laden, 520 miles round trip in two days, North Yorkshire to Surrey, absolutely no sweat.

You're very behind the times Scott, 75% new cars sold go to companies - have done for years. Consumer finance has been very PCP focused for best part of a decade (despite PCPs* being around for nearly 3 - decades).

Jon.

*PCH now becoming popular, pushed by the industry as the consumer has fewer rights than with a PCP.

N.B when I drive my 740, I rest smug in the knowledge that there's no older.

In the last ten years I have used at different points several early seventies beetles, several Saab v4, a 71 Volvo 164 and a 68 Amazon estate as my daily drivers, winter, summer, tens of thousands of miles,, with more smiles per gallon than any newer cars.

Undoubtedly a lot more smiles per gallon bgn but probably fewer miles per gallon. Cars in the 70s did 30 mpg from my recollection.

The problem all old cars face is the increasing low emotions zones, how many folk had to get rid of their perfectly functional landrovers and transit vans in London when they extended it's boundaries. Not sure if I can use the 7 seats the landrover has to collect the family from Heathrow now or I have to use the Volvo and 2 of them catch the bus. The boundary used to be the city side of the airport but think it's now further out.

Paul.
164 had horrific thirst, as did my 3.3 1966 Vauxhall viscount. The rest were usually mid thirties and I could normally eke forty mpg from a v4 Saab. Used to run a Porsche 928s4 auto and it would see 25mpg with a bit if care. But it was from about 1988 as I recall, so a bit new. I would genuinely swap my modern Saab for an Amazon or pv, or another v4 but all are getting expensive. A nice 145 would be a good compromise.

Popped down to Devon yesterday, 370 mile round trip on £50 derv, coming back was dark and very wet on the '303, but glad I took the 53 V70 rather than the missus 63 BMW 320d.

And clipped over 629k on the way back too ;-)
