volvo 480/ renault 19
hi just wondering if there are any die hard 480turbo fanatics out there who might be able to give me some advise about there 1.7l Turbo engine,
i used to own a 1721cc renault 19 TXE, the engine is called the f series and im pritty sure that the 480/440 engine was exactly the same because volvo and renault teamed up to make it, but volvo decided to do somthing abit special with it ie, the turbo. im not sure why reanult never did a turbo 1.7 in any other their range but im interested because i now own a renault 19 16v 1764cc which is the same block (board out an extra 43cc) but with and an extra 8v, now i know how quick this engine 137bhp as standard, but its torque isnt great, its a real drivers car real revvy i love it but i know there alot of companies turboing this engine with there own kit, i want to try this by using volvo 480/440 parts. if anyone has any idea about this any info would be great, if possible pictures of the engine, close up ip the exsaust mainifold and turbo unit, all connections for oil/air pipes and where thay mount to the engine would be a great start. as far as turboing, i know that this is possible becasue volvo themselfves did it, the engine is similar to the YB block of the cosworth that ford use, same oil sprayer design and very good cooling system, now i think the combination of a volvo turbo unit and a high reving 16v engine would produce roughly 200/250bhp with machined pistons (to reduce compression), thicker head gasket, bigger injectors, correct engine managment, and a chip also the need for a specialsit to tune it up, if anyone couls help that would be great, also if anyone has a volvo 480/440 1.7 turbo, which is going cheap ie, mot failure or blown engine anything consierd in the preston are going cheap get in contact cheers for reading alex |

why don't you just drop a 440 turbo engine in it and chip it. Youll be close to 200 bhp. Or just buy a 480/440 turbo. Sounds like a lot of messing about to me. But each to their own. Good luck.

the whole reason i would like to just use the turbo of the volvo is that the 16v engine is a far better engine to turbo and the 19 16v is better than the 480/440

That really is the wrong thing to say on a volvo forum:-) . I would agree on the 480. But the 440 turbo is a cracking car. Would cost a lot less to insure than the renault and no one would expect a 440 to belt out 200 horses.

I can see where your coming from with the blocks been the same or nearly the same but i would think there is going to be a big differance with the head as it has an extra cam and 8 valves.
The 8 valve engines have the inlet and exhaust coming out on the same side as each other where i would think it goes in 1 side on yours and out the other side. Both manifolds come out the rear of the engine if thats any help. Not to sure where the oil and cooling pipes run as its a while since i've worked on a 480 turbo. |

LOOKED AT DOING THIS B4 ON THE 340, THE 16V HEAD WILL NOT FIT THE F2N 480 BLOCK, TRIED IT, DONT WORK, OIL HOLES ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE, SLIGHTLY OUT OF LINE.
