Morning biggbn,
You could try one on each foot? What materials were your dads canoes made from? self design? My first attempt at boat building, goes as follows, couple of wooden cheese crates, fixed together end to end, covered in VAST amounts of pitch, after heating, must have had water in the mix, spitting and splattering all over the place, quite pain full! anyway, end result, when launching into"the brook" sunk immediately! Back to the drawing board. I wanted to progress from the rafts made from used sleepers "borrowed" from the local railway siding. Much to heavy to transport.
Regards,Keith.

My uncle once built a small sailing yacht / dinghy (don't know the correct terminology) in his garage. He was brilliant with wood. When it was finished he sold it, for the cost of materials alone, to the local school for kids to learn to sail on the lake at Tatton Park. He just wanted to see if he could build one, he had no intention of every sailing it himself.

We have a Kayak company on my estate at work, North East Kayaks for those who are interested, and everything now seems to be moulded plastic. Much lighter, stronger, cheaper but sadly no craftsmanship.

I once spent half a day kayaking down the river Dordogne in central France. Absolutely beautiful and a wonderful trip. Minimal effort, maximum pleasure. I know from my BiL that sea kayaking is a very different game. I prefer the easy route, ha ha.

Two were fibreglass, one was canvas or a similar material I presume, stretched over a handmade frame. Beautiful bit of kit but he had designed it badly and it was fast but wobbly, we called it the killer kayak!!
