Default Core plug failure

I have a V70 '53 D5 Geartronic 142,000.miles. I have just had to pay £700 + having had a sudden loss of oil. It was the result of a £4 core plug failing. It would appear that Volvo are aware of this problem as the new core plug is all metal as opposed to rubber covered as original. If my car had a manual gearbox the cost would have been in excess of£1,200. Has any other member had this problem?

Hi

Can anyone advise if the problem is limited to the D5 engine. I have a 2003 S80 manual 140bhp petrol engine, also does mileage play a part as mine has only 54K on the clock?

Petrols can be prone too like in this thread but the easier location of the core plug means that it's not an expensive or difficult fix.

Rather than mileage, it's probably more related to oil quality, oil change regime and the state of the PCV system.

Thanks Cheshire5

I'll get mine changed then on the next service as a precautionary measure, mines got full service history 11 main dealer 3 local trusted garage, no idea about the PCV system though.
