Dimming Rear view mirror
Just acquired a 2011 S40 R-Design.
Is it possible to replace the manual rear view mirror with an auto dipping unit? In other words, is the wiring loom fitted to the fitting on the top of the windscreen? Thanks David |

Yes.
The rear view mirror is also the receiver for the vehicle remote controls for central locking, and is the receiver for the vehicle tyre pressure monitoring transmitters. The rear view mirror thus needs to be loaded with the correct software for the vehicle it is fitted to. 2nd hand mirrors from other vehicles with software already loaded cannot be used.

I believe this method of calibration already fits how most of my life is!! So to be 100% clear (I've read the instructions @Clan..thanks). I CAN buy a second hand unit - I assume the current rain sensor is already present in the manual mirror back mount against the screen. There will be no need to fiddle with VIDA? 2nd hand will work fine. Be careful though as the mirrors changed around 2006/7. If it has a couple of fairly obvious LED looking thinks below the mirror on the front it's the earlier type.
The rain sensor is stuck to the window. If it's one with a compass you poke an unfolded paper clip into a hole in the bottom to begin calibration then drive around in circles to calibrate until it displays the direction. You also (as part of the process) choose a magnetic zone based on where you are in the world. It's all covered in the owners manual.

No cable
OK - so correct mirror obtained on E-Bay and the instructions in the link kindly provided by Clan duly followed.
However, when I had removed the top light panel and screws (not sure what difference that made) I was unable to locate the cable and connector on the diagrams. The only cables where the connector to the light cluster, one I could see going into a small box mounted on the roof and a cluster of about 5 cables, all stuck together and glued to the headlining. The diagram seems to indicate the mirror cable is tucked beyond the visor clip, but I couldn't locate anything. Any ideas please? Thanks David |
