Unhappy Intermittent wiper relay

Hello all. My very recently acquired 1999 v40 1.6 has a few issues. The wipers will not self park and the intermittent wiper function does not work.
The rear wash wipe does not work but I can hear the pump running, have not checked the motor voltage yet ,its been too cold ! I would very much appreciate your valuable advice on the front wiper probs Thanks.

Sounds like a few different issues at the same time...

Wipers not parking = misaligned wiper linkage, needs adjusting, it's fiddly, so while you're there, check for excessive play in the arm bushes and consider replacing the whole linkage, as it'll start lifting the arm to touch the bonnet eventually, and squealing loudly

Intermittent not working = could be faulty relay or wiring or stalk, search for "CEM wiring information" -- I have a spare relay if needed, and a spare stalk -- quick test with multimeter should reveal all

Pump whirring but not spraying = loose fluid pipe? If so, no idea if it's routed inside the car, but if it is could be messy...! I guess you've checked the obvious, that you actually have some washer fluid in the reservoir....?

Thanks for the info. The relay could be the answer, where is it hiding and how can I identify the correct relay. the guy who had this before me was happy to put up with the 2 speed wipers and being precise when turning the wipers off avoiding too much view blocking, but he has today given me a wiper stalk. The linkage seems quite sound so I am thinking this is an electronic fault as well. Is this a possibility.

Do you mean it's not stopping at all, or just parking in the wrong place? Linkage alignment has no relevance to how worn out it is. It's a common fault with these cars, if it's been replaced in the past then quite likely it was a bodged or careless job.

Default V 40 self parking

Hi pal the wipers don't stop unless they are turned off. I fitted the wiper stalk I was given and it made no difference. thanks

Either I'm being dense, or you're not being clear, but I don't understand your problem. The wipers are supposed to move when they're turned on, and stop when they're turned off.

Do you mean you only have 3/4 working settings for the front?
up for single wipe
down 1 intermittent - doesn't work
down 2 steady wipe
down 3 monsoon

pull to front wash/wipe
push the button to rear wash/wipe
slide the tag left to rear wipe intermittent
slide the tag right to rear wipe steady

As I recall, intermittent wiper and front washer are both on the same fuse, although I'm not 100% sure about that. I never found the root cause of my wiper issues in the last car, I just kept changing the fuse whenever it popped every so often.

Bear in mind, someone might have swapped the two pumps over rather than fix the problem.

I get what the OP means. Intermittent is not working at all. Speeds 1 and 2 do work but when turned off the wipers stop on the screen in whatever position they are in, no self park so have to turn them off at just the right moment. I guess the intermittent cannot work if they won't self park so if that issue can be solved then both will be solved.

If so, I'd naturally suspect a faulty relay, this can probably be tested easily with a multimeter
