I too would say XC70 D5 auto the red is lovely colour

FWD version will be. A bit better on fuel and less to go wrong

Hi Had 2008 XC70 awd great for a few years nothing was a problem could load it and get on with it with long deck.My partner 5ft1 did not like it around town auto gearbox on roundabouts was abit take offish it is a heavy car .Seats were firm great to sit it but if they are petite may not like it .Getting out of was easy .Colours on XC70 are pretty drab so she was not impressed .I have a V60 powder blue 2.0 163.D4 17inch wheels.she Loves the colour seats and it handles great .I would Have a go in XC70 in town and see how you feel. I would have one again and change my partner .

I've now kindly been offered the chance to have an extended overnight test of a 2015 V70 D4 SE 8-speed automatic in the very near future by my local Volvo specialist.

This will give me an opportunity to do some real evaluation of a real car and will provide a baseline of sorts, unless I like it enough to buy it.

(Buying my previous manual P2 V70 D5 was a no-brainer, as was my even more previous P1 automatic 2.5 10V petrol V70.)

What will be interesting is to see whether or not the new 4-cylinder diesel is more responsive and less "no power or full power" than it's D5 predecessor.

(I nearly bought a 2008 V70 automatic but found the engine slow to respond to my right foot. It would hesitate for a while and then roar, whereas I'd have liked a more gradual response.)

I had a MY 13 XC70 D5 215 se lux Geartronic and I and my wife both liked the car a lot.It towed my caravan with ease and when solo on a journey was pretty good on fuel as well (mid 40's). As we both have back problems we found it quite easy to get in and out of (my wife is just over 5'1"). We had the car for nearly 3 years which for me is a lot as I usually get itchy after about 1 year. Also my wife thought it was very easy to drive and the 215 twin turbo engine is pretty quick but also more efficient than the older versions. We now have a new XC90 otherwise we would probably still have the XC70 (very reliable).

If the 70-series is similar to the 60-series, you should find a D4 FWD to be very close in performance to a D5 AWD.

I have a FWD xc70 so have the the same engine and gearbox.
It is still a heavy car and still a 'turbo' engine (so still needs time to spool up), but once you learn to anticipate the gap in traffic it has plenty of pull from a standstill. If anything, Wheelspin and torque steer can even be an occasional problem out of a tight junction.
Learn to knock the g'box into sport just before pulling up to a junction, roundabout, etc, though, so that Start/Stop is temporarily disabled. Not that it's dangerous but there's Nothing worse than having it cut out just as you see a gap coming!
If you are already rolling along then acceleration is pretty instant with the twin turbo setup.
