Default Potential V40 diesel owner

Help needed on which Diesel engine V40 to buy.
My wife is due to change her car and wants a V40. Not new, but MY14/15.
I own a XC60 D5.
I believe some V40’s are 4 cylinders and some 5 cylinders.
Is there a buying guide on what to look out for?
I have read that the 1.6 D2 engine is not very reliable?
Any help greatly appreciated.

I would suggest a car with a Volvo engine rather than Ford/PSA 1.6 D2.

Both the earlier 5 cylinder and later 4 cylinder D3 and D4 are Volvo engines and also the 2.0L D2 from MY16. The D4 is a 4 cylinder from I think MY15 and the D3 a 4 cylinder from MY16. The 5 cylinder engines are well proven and I would have thought a MY14/15 D3 with 150 bhp would be a good option.

I was advised to avoid the early D3 and D4 engines due to ERG problems. I bought a 2013 D2 18 months ago and have been very pleased with performance and economy.

Early d3 d4 are 5 cylinder engines and have no real problems with egr valves. The later d4 4 cylinder Volvo engines did have issues with egr but that is pretty much resolved now.

Exactly that. Later diesel engines had EGR problems. The later D2 is better than the early one but many people think the earlier D3 and 4 are better than the later ones.

We bought a My14 D3 5cylinder geartronic last year and it is a smashing car; quiet, good performance, smooth and a joy to drive. I often take it instead of the XC90 as it is more fun to drive.

A lot of nonsense written about the Ford/PSA 1.6 engine, usually by folk who have never owned one. It’s in millions of cars by several makers and there are bound to be a few lemons. The early 16v version was susceptible to poor servicing, but the 8v modelsiswell thought of in the motoring press.

The newer 2.0 VEA 'D2' sounds like a bag of spanners though.

Which probably means it'll be very reliable.

OT, but I had a '77 Guzzi T3. Lovely bike, many happy miles. Fitted a Cali screen and some K&N filters. Some gas shocks and a King & Queen seat sorted out the comfort and handling. Had to sell it in '83 for about £550 but I guess they fetch a bit more now with classic status.
