Default V50 - spring release sound at ~12mph

Hi Guys,

Got a bit of an odd one on wifey's V50 '07 2.0D SE Lux manual. It's got 97k miles on it.

When setting off, from the car being switched off, there is a noise which sounds like a spring releasing when the car gets to about 12mph. It can also be felt through the throttle pedal.
- The noise seems to be coming from the drivers side front corner area.
- If the car is sat and left idling and then driven off it doesn't happen again.
- If the car is in stop go traffic it doesn't do it.
It just seems to be the first time it passes 12mph from being switched off.

There are no other symptoms other than her mate saying that the car seemed to be throwing out black smoke when she followed the other day, but is that just due to 97k miles?

Any ideas or pointers of what to check would be appreciated.

Please excuse what may be an apparently dumb ass question: I take it this is normal and I don't need to do anything with it?

Yes - its absolutely normal - if you're in doubt, pull the ABS fuse (Might be Fuse number 53 in the passenger compartment box) - then start the car and drive off GENTLY you may find a whole host of warning lights come on, if there's no "clonk" - the clonk was ABS self test.

|Its probably not such a good idea to pull the engine compartment fuses controlling the pump and valves as you may need to clear a fault code afterwards - I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I can give you better guidance re the engine compartment ABS related fuses!

Don't forget to put the fuse back in!
