Default XC90 B5p MPG better than feared

We've had our B5p XC90 almost a week now. I reset the trip computer on Tuesday. My wife drove from Sheffield to Lancaster and back yesterday (200 miles). I checked the trip computer today and since the reset on Tuesday it's averaged 36MPG. I am amazed at that - I thought it might just crack 30.

It IS a hybrid isnt it? 👍

The original volvo D6 hybrid in 2012 could do well over 100 mpg if used for the favourable journeys.

Yep, the B5p is very efficient at around 60-70 mph. I made a 5000 mile roadtrip in on the British Isles this spring with a car fully loaded and a 60 kg rooftop tent on the top and I averaged around 36.5 mpg for the whole trip including some (around 2000 miles) continental 80 mph highway sections

It’s only a mild hybrid, so no pure electric range.

Mild Hybrid only so really just a better, more instant start/stop system with maybe a little electric assist when pulling away from standstill compared to the T5 but not much really to write home about.

On one 70 mile return trip I did (with a recharge point at the half way point), I managed 2,904mpg as I accidently kicked the ICE on at one point when overtaking a slow car.
That's pretty positive!!

This is consistent with my experience in my 2021 B5P - on a predominantly motorway run, with a bit of A / B road suburbia at each end, I get 36 mpg ish so long as I keep the speed around 65 / 70.

As you'd expect, MPG drops off significantly if above that speed.

It took me a while to stop trying to drive my XC90 like the 330d it replaced which resulted in a slightly frustrating driving experience. Now I have made that adjustment though, I love it, it's great at just cruising around in a relaxed fashion.

Find the B5P surprisingly economic, our XC60 B5P gets the same MPG as wife's previous XC40 T3. Regularly see over 40mpg indicated average in normal use.

Update on this. Went from tonbridge to Reading and back on Monday, almost entirely motorway, bit of suburbia each end and lots of roundabouts going from the M3 to the M4. Traffic on the m25 was stop / start and generally slow. I kept up with the flow of traffic, maximum of about 65 or so.

On the way out in poor traffic it did 41mpg, on the way back in better traffic it did 44.

I was very impressed with that.
