Default Changing discs on XC90

Hello all, not been on in a while, did you miss me?

Anyway - the time has come to replace the discs & pads on the XC90 (MY2007 D5) because they are all looking rather shabby and the brake performance is not as good as I'd expect it to be. All 4 discs have a margin (about 1cm) around the edge that isn't shiny like a braking surface should be, and the back pads are certainly near the limit.
I'm not one to do things by halves so am planning on replacing the whole lot (I assume that it would be wise to replace the parking brake shoes at the same time while the rear discs are off?)
I did a bit of a search first but couldn't find any answers, so here goes:

1. I've had a price from Rufe for the parts (£312.37 delivered or £286.38 collected) and was toying with the idea of replacing them myself.
2. Are any special tools needed, or are there any special tips/tricks to doing the job (I have done brakes on many different types of cars over the years so am fairly proficient mechanically)

Any help, advice or suggestions (as long as they don't involve sharp objects and nether regions) appreciated as always.

Oh, and Happy Valentines Day to all you lovers

Have a look in the XC90 articles section, there is a guide there. I replaced the discs and pads on my V70 with no specialist tools.

Thats a good price. Easy enough job. I would replace the parking brake retaining springs at the same time too.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether it is better to stick to genuine Volvo parts, or go for Mintex (or similar) which are cheaper? What about the drilled/grooved discs?
I don't want to compromise safety and I don't want to save a few quid now to find that they wear out in no time, but has anyone got experience of the different types and if so, what would your advice be? I must admit that the drilled/grooved ones look pretty smart, but do they perform, and which pads would be best with them?

All advice gratefully received

GSMGuy recommended Greensuff pads....http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/ He thought the braking was better.

FRF are a good source for the original pads....http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpo...0&postcount=11

Thanks Roy, I've had prices from Simon at FRF for the discs and pads, but just wanted to know opinions of the alternatives and if they were worth considering?

Certainly worth considering the Greenstuff pads as they do have a very good reputation and far less dust as well.

I just went with genuine. You will struggle to make a big enough saving with Mintex etc, so it wasn't worth it to me.

Thanks all - just ordered them from Rufe, collect next Sat when I'm down that way. All I've got to do then is try and find time to fit them................

Hi there Chrisnjulie,
I put new rear pads, discs and brake shoes on mine late last year. Straight forward to do.
Only a couple of things to bear in mind, get some new brake shoe springs(dealer only part) as worn ones break quite easily and be careful that you dont push the hand brake cable too far into its hole as it might become disconnected then it means removing the centre armrest/cup holder stuff to re-connect (again fairly straight forward).
Don't let this put you off though.

My front pads and possibly discs are due for replacement soon.

Regards
dd1898.
