Default 1998 v40 estate rear fog lamps

Hello,

I have a S reg 2.0l V40 estate with a 'broken' rear fog lamp.

I'm a novice when it comes to car work but I have worked through changing the bulb and looking at the fuses/relays by the pedals and under the bonnet - although I didn't seem to find a specific fuse for the rear fogs any fuses/relays to do with lamps and fogs seem to be fine.

I have done some reading on here and all the other lights seem to work and I have the headlamps switched on to the correct position. When I press the fog light button I hear a click but nothing comes on the dash.

I read about taking out the instrument panel (the OP had no click then) however, I don't want to attempt this if I don't need to as I'm not very confident with it.

Short of tracing through all the wiring, is there anything else anyone could suggest for me?

Thanks a lot for reading,
nixius

Hey all, I've been busy for a little bit but still no further with this.

I thought I would try bumping once to see if anyone who may have missed it before can now see.

Since this last post, all of my manual aircon lights have gone (although 1 has been gone for months). I doubt this is relevant but thought it worth mentioning.

Thanks for reading,
nixius

1st thing to try would be the bulb(s) and then check the fuse. If there is a 'click' as you push the button, I would imagine the fog light relay is ok but never rule it out until you have tested it. If you cannot solve it from here, it could be much more involved and will require component and continuity testing on the wiring loom. That would be a job for a specialist in my opinion.

Hello Inchley, thanks for your reply.

Does anyone know specifically which fuse the fog lamp is attached to?

I have tried 2 bulbs from a brand new pack with no luck. I've checked all fuses related to 'lights' and there is indeed a click when I push the button. The headlights are turned to on as well. I might just buy a set of new fuses and replace a bunch just incase there is a hair line fracture - although I would not have thought the fog lamp would have been on a fuse on its own?

I suppose I may well have to send it in to a garage, I have no idea why the relay is behind the instrument panel and not with the rest of them under the bonnet.

You need the wiring checking with a meter see if any power is going to them at the connection.

Hello Nixius, you say there are no fog lights showing on the instrument cluster but have you had a look to see if the rear fog light comes on?
Also these cars only have the offside rear fog light, not a pair, unless a previous owner did the conversion.

Fuse no6 20A on internal box, covers heated seats, side/tail lights, interior lighting and fog lights.

Fuse no 4 20A on engine bay fuse box covers Horn, fog lights and alarm. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies all.

zoidberg, someone more in the know than me at my place of work got a multimeter out at lunch today. As the other 2 bulbs on the cluster work, we piggy backed their connection to confirm the bulb worked. We then removed the rear fog bulb and witnessed a ~0.25 current going across the connection, I think this might be the cars way of pulsing if the bulb is missing? I'm not very up on all this so forgive me, my colleague had to leave suddenly so I couldn't speak to him more to follow this up. One thing he did say as well, was that there were 2 earths but one wasn't working, although as it's a cluster and all the bulbs were using the same earth it probably didn't matter? Strange.

Robmac99, gladly I was aware about there only being one fog lamp and the other side doesn't have a conversion done - there is no wire going to it and the hole where a bulb would go has something blocking it. Sadly, there is definitely no light coming on.

Wainfleet, many thanks for that information. I have used that to switch out (again) the correct interior box fuse to no avail. I can't actually get under the bonnet at the moment as the cable has snapped (not having much luck right now!) however, the alarm is definitely working so I can probably rule that out now too.

I will try and get the multimeter out again and brush up on what I need to do, failing that I think it may be time to look at pulling out the instrument panel *gulp*

I'm sorry to resurrect this thread, with a few hundred views I thought I'd update what happened.

Basically, I got a local auto electrician in and he ran a new wire from the relay to a fuse after getting the instrument panel out etc.

He just 'placed' the wire into the fuse so I could remove it should I want it to be done more comprehensively at a later date. 1 year later and it's still working fine.
