Default 2015 D5 2.0d snapped cam belt

Ok new to the forum so hello!
We have a 2015 xc90 which has covered 135000 miles with full Volvo service history.
Today just travelling down the local bypass and the timing belt has snapped is this a case of damaged valves etc or is it just new belt pulleys and water pump and away we go?
Would we have any grounds to argue this with Volvo given the full service history or is this just banging heads on a brick wall?
Any help appreciated thanks Keith

All the belts and tensioners should have been replaced at the 108000 mile service..

was it the cam belt that snapped due to the Aux belt failing and tangling in the cambelt? This is what can happen. The aux belt must be changed every 54000 miles..

you wont need a water pump .. you may need a cylinder head with camshafts if there is damage.

Is this a SPA car (ie new shape XC90)?

If so, then as Clan says, it should have been done already (at 90k miles or 5 years).

If it has FVSH and had all the belts done on schedule then you have a chance of some contribution. If you don't then Volvo won't help.

Just re-read and you say it is a 2 litre, so it must be a new shape XC90. I think it is an intervention engine, so I would expect bent valves and potentially damaged piston tops.

A new Volvo exchange diesel engine is about 7k plus VAT. Fitting depends on how much your dealer likes you. Someone on here a while back was quoted nearly 18k all in for an engine swap.

My engine swap (for a petrol but similar job) was about 9k all in.
