Default Faulty fuel gauge 2010 XC90

Wife just rang me from the M6 to say the fuel gauge on our XC90 is behaving oddly. It suddenly dropped from three quarters to empty with a indicated range of 0 on the computer. No fuel light came on though. She panicked that the car was about to run out of fuel so pulled off and filled up but it only held £50 (about half usual fill up bill). Is the fuel gauge a common fault or is a symptom of some electrical malaise?

This sounds like an intermittent open circuit , rare !
pop it in the dealer and explain exactly what you wrote above . This fault isnt at all common . did the gauge read correctly when she filled it up?

On a very very few occassions had the scenario when I've gone to fill up from 'empty' and the guage has only registered about half full - but has then crept up to full by the time I've finished the journey - or has gone back to normal the next time I switch the ignition on.
Never had it drop whilst on the move though...

No it seems that when she filled it the fuel gauge returned to full and the range was 415 miles! Most odd. I told her to take the car to a Volvo dealer on Monday for a check meanwhile zero the trip and at 350 miles refuel. (I recently cracked 900 miles on my Passat!)
