Given that I've heard multiple Volvo dealers are using thicker oils like 5w-40, it might seem that using 0w-20 is not that big of a deal in the UK - the weather doesn't get that cold
It's the entire VEA diesel range that needs a 0w-20 to the VCC RBS0-2AE spec, not just the D4 variant (not sure about the petrol variants).

Just because you've heard stories about other oil viscosities being used doesn't mean those stories are true, nor that using the incorrect oil won't cause harm the engine. Whatever the ambient temperature, a 0w cold rating will circulate quicker on a cold start than a 5w. And why use a heavier operating viscosity than specified? The couple of quid you saved on the oil will be spent on the worse mpg (and then some).

Because after 2015 it was a brand new 4 cylinder engine design by volvo castrol and volvo worked together to get the best from the newest oil technology available and came up with a formulation that is 0w/20 VCC RBS0-2AE. which is a unique volvo/castrol specification to get the least emissions and best fuel consumption .and best engine protection . This is becoming available from other oil manufacturers now . Volvo specifically forbid any other oil in this engine and warranty is invalided if traces of other types of oil are found when investigating a fault .
You won't find a volvo dealer using anything else as it contravenes it's franchise agreement with volvo .
If you choose to use anything else it this engine you risk damage ..

Default Legitimate alternative to Castrol Edge

Hi there, newbie to the forum so go easy on me but I've just had the 0.5l top up message come up on my 2014 D4 (181) for the first time (I've had the car from new and it's always been main dealer serviced),

Never ever been terrified of topping up engine oil before reading this thread

Anyway, Castrol Edge 0w20 still isn't readily available it seems but after a bit of research I found that Shell Helix Ultra Professional AS-L 0W-20 - 1Ltr has the correct Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE specification.

Just thought it might help someone out of a hole.

I'd be interested as to what mileage your car has done. I am on 106k and although I carry a litre of Volvo Castol 0W-20 oil I have yet to use any oil at all between services and I work my engine hard with towing a considerable amount of time during the summer.
Note: reading forums can give you Brand Anxiety!!

Mine's done about 75k (give or take). Never had the issue before but the service isn't too far away (next month). The only material difference is that I have had a prolonged illness (but I'm on the mend) which has meant the car has been used infrequently over the past four months. There's no evidence of a leak (or blue smoke) so I'm not sure of any relevance.

I had to add 0.5L of oil today... the message popped up driving back from an MOT failure. It's not been a great day!

Mines on 82k miles and uses about 1L every 4k miles. I have some cheap 0w-20 that meets the above Volvo spec.
