Hoping you find a solution to this one as I am in the same position. Have you bought a new surround? The good news is that I don't think it will leak, the water runs off somewhere. In the meantime cover liberally with rubber restorer to delay disintegration.

I found on my steel sunroof car that the outer edge of the seal is actually a furflex meterial. I gave my one a scrub with a toothbrush to clean it uop and it looked a lot better afterwards.
Not sure if the glass sunroof version is the same thoiugh. |

Not sure if you'd want a glass one. The problem is that the steel strip that the rubber seals on gets corroded and the water comes down the inside and drips in the slider channel instead of the gutter. I believe the metal sun roofs the seal attaches vertically and doesn't rely on the seal.

I can't see the point of a steel sunroof. They take up a heck of a lot of space and only let light in when its open and noisy.
A glass one is much more pleasant. I miss that aspect of my "old" GLE. However getting it to seal seemed impossible. I had a new seal dealer fitted but it never seemed to be making proper contact making a whistle at speed. Not sure why I didn't get it fixed, I must have been stressed at the time. It didn't seem to let water in though. The guttering and drain tube arrangement seems perfect.

Sunroofs really are not worth the hassle IMO, I hate them in every car. They are noisy (when closed), often leak, weaken the structure and the mechanisms are prone to failure. They are the one thing I do not repair, if they are ok just leave them alone and don't use it.
If I could be bothered I would just weld in a sheet and convert back to non-sunroof. Why do you need sun on your head anyway? In sunny weather its perfectly possible to see, so much that you need to wear sun glasses! |
