Lower (Left) Panhard Rod bushing attachment
My car is a '66 122 wagon or Amazon estate as you Brits would refer to it. (I am in Vermont in the USA.) I fitted an IPD poly bushing on the Panhard rod (lower left) and it doesn't seem to fit properly. When I tighten the attachment nut it seems to spin without ever getting properly tight. The threads on the bolt and nut look fine though the nut seems to fit slightly loosely. Has anyone ever fitted this bushing or similar? Does anyone know what the thread on the pin and nut is? It doesn't seem to be a common US(English) or metric thread? It seems to be the same as the thread on a new lower wishbone bolt that I happened to have. Thanks.

Pretty well all of the nuts on the axle are the same. Volvo #950366. Parts book gives 1/2" - 13 UNC. I think they are Nylocs.
On the saloon the panhard rod bushes are the same as the upper/inner front suspension arm bushes. #Usually called "cotten reels". The ones on the wagon are more heavy duty and the one at the body mount is bonded to its metal sleeve. The axle one appears to just be a rubber bush. This is the one that has a bit of give in it for compliance. Fitting poly bushes to both ends of the Panhard rod can make the rear suspension sound noisy as it tends to transmit thumps into the body. Using only poly bushes in the rear suspension removes virtually all of the compliance which can cause a bit of binding in some cases. OK for racing but you might prefer to continue with the original rubbers for the Panhard rod. Volvo changed the bushes in both ends of the upper support arm from a bonded bush to a rectangular block which helps compliance. It sounds as if you're either using the wrong nut or that one has stripped its threads. You could try one of the others. The one at the other end is the same number. It's also possible you have a saloon bush and that doesn't fit the wagon rod. The nut should tighten up at the end of the thread. This gives the correct amount of "crush" to the bush when it's squeezed between the axle plate and the outer washer. It has to be allowed to move around the bolt but not sideways. Do the tightening with the car suspension under normal load. |

Thanks, nearly sorted
Thanks, I took another look at it and I had been using a wrong nut. It is 1/2 " coarse. The threads had been bunged up a bit so I had to find a nut that was slightly loose fitting on a new bolt and got it to fit. Unlike the stock bushing this ipd bushing fits over the outside of the panhard rod (a flange about 3mm) and gets squeezed by the washer. I talked to ipd about it but they have been so far unresponsive. The upper bushing is rubber.
Thanks again. |
