Hi 960kg thank you for such a detailed and informative post, I intend to have a go at this hack shortly, can you confirm that the capacitors i require are the metallised ployestor film capacitors rated 2.2uf with a working voltage rated at 100v. (From Maplins)
the dimentions given are 30mm X 15mm X 6mm does this sound about right? I intend to use a 3.5mm Stereo Chassis socket monted ijnto one of the spare blanking swith covers, does it matter which terminal i use for the left or right channels or doesn't it matter as they both have a common gound. your advice is appreciated. RB

The stereo socket, best to wire it up and test in the car without putting the whole unit in the console hole, lay the unit on some rag to protect the fascia, then if the channels are wrong you can swop them over to suit. One of the best records to use is the Rolling Stones 2000 Light Years From Home as all the music comes out one channel and all the lyrics out the other channel all the way through the song so there is no mistake what channels you are listening to. Hope this helps you?

Thanks for the info, i purchased the components today ready to assemble and install when i get chance (hopefully in the next week or so) it looks as if its the right speaker channel goes to the TIP terminal of the stereo jack socket, so i will try it that way first. and let you now how i get on.

960 Kg Thank You
Hi today i completed this hack on my SC 805. and it works a treat.
i followed all the info found in this thread and it took about 1 hour in total. The hardest part was finding a cassette tape, ended up getting one from a charity shop. parts used 2 X Capacitors part number BX84F £1.59 each (Maplins) 1 X 3.5mm Stereo jack plug Part Number HF98G £1.89 Cassette £0.50p I used cable from an old pair of Headphones total cost £5.57 without this thread i would have had no idea of how to do this so thanks again. the only downside is my daughter has now hi jacked the cable and is controlling the music from her iPod in the back seat LOL RB

What exactly are the capacitors required for?
Is it the same for the HU 605? Just created an empty cassette, but need to put some resistance in the cassette shell, as the deck just spits it out. Thoughts? dan |

To be perfectly honest I haven't got a clue when it come to electronics I just followed the directions, with great success, given in the first post by 960KG.
As for the cassette, i removed all the tape from the spools, it did eject first time. I just pressed the tape button again and it now displays "TAPE B" but plays fine. RB

When you turn on the unit again it will still stay in. It will only pop out when you press eject, you can also change play modes without it poping out. The capacitors used will be ideal for your player but the wires taken from the pcb board may differ, it has to come from the amplifier side direct and not from the pre-amp side or tape head wires as the sound will be terrible. This thread only applies to the model it states, the SC 805. If you use the smaller black cylinder type, electrolytics, if the alternator or it`s circuit for any reason malfunctions it will charge up these type of capacitors and it will more likely take your expensive iPod or iPhone with it. The larger suitcase type, polyester, do not charge up as they also have no positive / negative polarity as the others have. The rating, mf, mentioned will give you superb sound keeping the treble and base responses identical to whatever track is played.

sorted the cassette issue
Just got the stereo out, and interestingly enough, all the connectors of the HU605 were being used. This is interesting (to me), as I thought the DIN connector was for a CD-changer....... that my car doesn't seem to have Will have to do some homework on this. I'm sure the mod is really easy to do - but I'm going to take some time to route the 3.5mm jack cable correctly Dan |

OK, so the Capacitors are used as audio protect IF the HU dies.
Need to have a look in more depth this week Dan |

Improving on this design;
You can work around the possibility of any alternator damage frying your phone and also remove any ground noise (especially when charging) by installing two 1:1 isolating transformers, one for each channel, in the signal path between phone and head unit. They also might remove the need for any caps to filter distortion on the low end. I had to do this on my hacked 801, because using a charger with my phone (Nokia E6) introduced all manner of alternator whine and switching noise. Head units that have a dedicated AUX port designed in from the factory usually use this approach to ensure ground loops are eliminated. Chris...
