Default Spanner / Socket Sizes....??

Hi, me again!!

This time the subject is spanners / sockets…..I’m getting mixed messages. I have a good range of metric from when I had my old Citroen, mainly Gordon, Teng & Britool. I was told that my 144 is metric, but when I came to remove the thermostat housing the other night – the 2 bolts were somewhere between 12 and 13mm.

I suspect I need both AF and metric – but can anyone suggest the main sizes I’d need. Before I could do 80% of jobs with am 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm & 17mm

Do these Volvos have a group of ‘usual suspects’

It’s a May 1970 model. Engine has 1969 stamped on it…..

Cheers….again!

"somewhere between 12 and 13mm" is almost certainly 1/2 inch (12.7mm)...

I'd also suggest 5/16" (~7.9mm), 3/8" (~9.5mm), 9/16" (~14.3mm), 5/8" (~15.9mm), 3/4" (~19mm) as decent sizes to have in any toolbox.

Mostly AF sizes, similar to metric in some cases.

Should have said that the thread sizes are UNC but the spaner sets are AF. AF spaners and sockets are freely available. Try ebay for good prices

Our Volvos are all metric and 11mm & 13mm are also used a few times.

An early 140 is imperial, they didn't go back to metric until 1975. The threads are mostly UNC.
