D5 Intermittent Judder under acceleration
Hi,
I'm trying to help a relative out with her 2007 S40 D5 SE Auto which has done around 100k miles, and it looks like it might have been an ex-police car (bodged wiring all over the place). I've more or less changed most of the filters, swapped out dodgy glow plugs for new ones. The car has just been for a wheel alignment as the tyres were wearing unevenly. Before the wheel alignment and even after the wheel alignment the car intermittently judders when you accelerate from low RPMs. VIDA shows that there is an issue with the swirl flap actuation, which I can confirm as the linkage has worn and pops off. There is an oil leak by the link, so I will be replacing the swirl flaps and the valve cover gasket at some point. Has anyone else had a similar issue? If so, what was the fix? Reading some other posts, the swirl flaps may contribute towards the judder, and others are suggesting some mounts or possibly the drive shafts. If it's the mounts, is this something that can be tested in-situ if so how? If it's the driveshafts, surely I should be able to rotate the front wheels and except a certain amount of rotation? Regards, T

Petrol, not diesel and V70 not S40 but in my case it was a corroded front nearside ABS reluctor ring.
It had rusted and expanded and was giving an incorrect speed reading which when compared to the offside ring looked to the ABS like one of the wheels was spinning, so the power was cut. This manifested as a judder from low RPM, especially when turning left at a T-junction. I presume that this was because being near full lock, there was quite a difference in angular velocity (rotational speed) between the wheels so the discrepancy was magnified. Just a thought. 2.4TSE

2.4TSE, I've got similar symptoms with my Mazda, hadn't even considered checking the ABS rings. Did you get any warning lights on the dash when this happened? And was it dependent on anything like weather or engine temp, or was it completely random?

I hope solving your problem is as easy.
Here's the thread I started with mine. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=294527 (Reading the thread again reminds me it was offside that failed, not nearside as expected given that this is the side that gets dragged through the muck in the gutter)

Thanks for the replies. If it's the ABS ring(s) and it thinks it's spinning a wheel, surely I could test out that theory by turning off the DTSC and see if the juddering is still present?

I'm fairly sure that when the DSTC is switched off, it is not actually off, just reduced. The stability part is gone (no helping hand when the car starts to slide or spin) but the ABS is still active. To disable this means pulling fuse(s) which I would not want to start doing.
With the car securely on a stand, not just a jack, it is easy to inspect the reluctor rings for signs of corrosion - and in my case, a complete split. They are fitted around the wheel ends of the driveshafts.

I'll try to have a look at her car over the weekend, hopefully I should be able to inspect it then. I'll have a look in VIDA to see what I should be looking for...

I would check ball joints and control arm bushes, if the tracking was out they are probably worn and under hard acceleration the wheel
Might skip (my fiesta did this if you tried to wheel Spin it). Also check the shock absorber.
