Mine reset itself, but it did take quite some miles, 50 or so.

It should go off itself eventually, providing the oil is no higher than 5.7 litres.

I used my snap on diognostic machine as I had it handy. Hate warning lights being lit with a passion, so sorry cannot be definite. I think as others have said it will go out by itself as it's linked to the electronic guage which requires 20+ miles to average the readings, but I did not wait to see.

I agree with what everyone else has said, but just to add - if your car has a sticker like this on the slam panel (photo of mine below), then I'd think about changing garages. Putting 8L of engine oil in a car that by the book takes 6L, or since the revised advice, 5.7L max, seems a bit worrying to me, also the garage must go through a lot more oil than they need to. I suspect the bill was for 2x 4L containers as oil often comes in that size now?

If the level is half way on the drip stick now between min and max, then the light will go out after some further use

The light will eventually turn off in time once you've drained some oil, but a garage could turn it off with VIDA once the oil level is correct (If you want to get rid of the light sooner).

The handbook says 6L of oil is required, but after production, there were issues with rising oil levels due to failed DPF regenerations. Volvo recalled their cars & recalibrated the dipstick so the car thinks the engine oil is maximum at 3/4 on the dipstick (5.7 litres). Add any more than 5.7 litres & you'll get the "Engine system service required" light.

So, for future reference if you're adding oil to the engine or servicing the car yourself... Don't fill the car to max on the dipstick, only fill to 3/4 (5.7 litres). If a garage changed the oil for you this time around, then I'd recommend bringing your car to a Volvo specialist in future (If you don't do DIY that is). If the garage knew anything about Volvo's & they did service the car (Not clear whether they did service your car in your post), they'd know about the dipstick calibration that Volvo did & wouldn't have added too much oil in the first place.
Indeed Stu. I'm thinking the same as you (My post is quoted above).

Just to update and for further advice please.
The engine system service light remains on.
The car apparently runs normally at present.
Oil level is fine.
The mechanic read the codes today and it did show a problem with the oil level sensor. He reset it but the light came straight back on.

Do I just put up with the light in favour of an expensive fix and the possibility of creating more problems?

Anyone had this sensor replaced and is it an expensive job?
Could the light still go out at some stage?

Thanks
Steve

I’d advise that you get the car on Vida and get the proper codes read which should provide more of a clue as to the fault. It sounds like your mechanic has just used a generic reader.

Can you be a little more specific. What is the level on the dipstick just to be sure?

If you take more oil out of the sump, does the light go out and if it does, at what level?

The revised oil level is midway between the original "Full" mark and the halfway mark on the dipstick. If the light can be made to go out by lowering the level you can make a judgement whether there is enough oil in the sump at that level but if it never goes out you would seem to need a new oil level sensor. A VIDA reading of the system would be reassuring.

Update. The light went off of its own accord yesterday. Bizarre.
Thanks a lot.
