Default Leaking VVT solenoid and replacement

On late 90's -2000 Volvos, if you need to change a VVT solenoid gasket, the new gaskets come with a small filter in one of the holes, now I am told by Volvo I'd better get a complete VVT solenoid assembly because of that new filter.
The new gasket may cause a failure of the old solenoid that will damage the VVT pulley (as far as I understood what the Volvo people told me).

I don't see how a filter that goes into a hole on the solenoid can be a problem.

What would you do, reuse the old solenoid or just pay for a new one (£100 +)
