Thanks for the replies. Just been to Devon to see a PV544 on ebay in the 240.
The lanes are worst than Cornwall's. All you could here from the back suspension with all the pits was bang, bang, bang. I will be returning the springs and shocks and buying something more heavy duty. Cheers Mike |

What make of dampers were they?
Knocking can often be the dampers not tight enough, mostly on teh bottom bolt if they are not quite the right width The bushes are normally suspect number 1 but as you have replaced them they should be fine. Can you make it knock by bouncing on the rear end? |

The dampers were Bilstein B4 front and rear.
Drove last night by myself and it was alot worst. Seem to be banging with every pit. Whats the best dampers and springs you can get? |

mgs. I can see this becoming deeply expensive. Buying various brand components without knowing the cause of the problem. I think you need a mechanic with Volvo 240 expertise to diagnose.
Good luck. . |

P.S. If for example the shock absorbers have been changed, can you re-fit the old ones, or borrow some known to be OK ones? I'm just trying to save you from spending until the problem is diagnosed.
Good luck . |

Thanks for that, I will put the old ones back on. All I know is that I never had this banging noise until I changed the springs and shocks.

What shocks did the Bilsteins replace? Year not mentioned but at least the later 240 estates could have Nivomats. When these were fitted they used softer springs. If Nivos are swapped to standard shocks the back end will go a bit low and of course the ride will be softer due to the springs. There at least 3 strengths of springs. Nivo, normal or heavy duty. There might also be an extra heavy duty too. Soft Nivo springs may or may not explain the banging but they could be hitting the bump stops a lot. The bump stops are prone to breaking off and then you would get banging! I'd check those.
