Which model do you have? Is it a real key or the fob in dashboard type?

Its a '99 V70 IIRC, so ordinary key.

I don't believe there is an interlock on the key, so I think it'll most likely be a worn or sticky ignition switch ?

It will be the release button at the front to edge of the automatic gearbox gear stick. Clean this up as much as possible, and spray some lubrication into it - spray grease, such as GT85 is ideal. Work it back and forth a few times until it's operating smoothly, and this will probably sort out your problem. There's a mechanism from this button to the ignition switch to prevent key release in other gears, and if it's sticky or doesn't release completely the key will still be held even when it's in Park.

Have you been able to wiggle the key free Forbsie? Maybe turn the key between off to ignition position I/II and back again to release it? Wiggle the steering wheel to release the key?

As I mentioned, I don't think there is an interlock on the ignition key in these. The switch on the gearbox selector is to prevent the gearlever from being moved from Park unless the brake pedal has been pushed down. I don't believe this interlock acts upon the ignition switch but I'm happy to be told otherwise if someone is absolutely 100% certain about this.

Forbsie, an interlock is a switch that is depressed when something mechanical is moved, which in turns locks/releases something else. Its an inter-linked lock, or interlock.

It only happens very occasionally, but no wiggling or putting it between position 1/ll releases it, if I leave it for a while, start up move in D then back into P it'll release

Does yours have the release button below and to the right of the ashtray?

The cable link releases/over-rides the steering lock - my C70 won't start unless you press that over-ride button.

NB
Have you tried putting your foot hard down on the brake pedal and then pulling the auto lever back to neutral?
