Couple of Questions
Hi All
I have just bought an XC70. It's a lovely car, I have a couple of questions which I am sure the collective wisdom on here will be able to help me with (I haven't had a chance to look into them properly yet: 1. What size screws/bolts hold the undertray in place? There is a tapping from underneath which seems to be that. My local dealer wasn't overly helpful in giving the size, just saying they would be £2.16 + VAT each.... 2. The car has random intermittent electrical issues - messages will come up and say things like 'Parking Assist Service Required' or 'Dipped beam bulb failure' and various others, which then clear. Of course the bulb hasn't gone and the Park Assist feature works sometimes. Also, the radio/cd player comes on, but sometimes I get no sound from it (I don't know if there is a separate amplifier for it), and then the sound will come back suddenly. There are a fair few others. I am thinking it may be something like a bad earth somewhere. If anyone has any ideas (e.g. 'They all do that, Sir. It's a thingy in the whatsit come loose) I would be grateful. Thanks in advance |

re: bolts - I don't know off the top of my head but what I do know is, the ones I got off ebay were too narrow (despite clearly labelled as correct for my model/year etc) and I had to rummage around in the big box-o-spares to find ones to fit
so definitely find out the answer first before you blindly order some like I did re: electrical - the generic go-to answer seems to be have you checked your battery, they cause random gremlins when they get low Last edited by stuart bowes; Aug 31st, 2021 at 13:52. |

I'd get under there first though before doing anything as bolt holes in the undertray can often be damaged, enlarged requiring washers or the tabs on the undertray missing completely. Basically, it may be loose because there's no way of securing it requiring a new undertray. Check the battery and charging system in general from resting voltage to cranking to idling to out on the road before attempting to "fix" anything.

Cheers guys.
I do need to take a look underneath to see if the undertray is broken at all (I used to have a V70 which was) and what fixing are missing - I do think £2.59 for a screw is a bit excessive though, when I can likely get something the same size from a local supplier. Not had a chance to charge the battery up yet either - since I got the car I have been using it every day, and getting back late in the evenings. I have seen stuff that says it could be the central electronic module and that cleaning pin connections will do it. Looks a bit of a faff to get at though. |

CEM is generally around 2005/6 but we don't know what you have. If you create a signature for your posts, we'll always know.
You could always buy one bolt, then take it to your favourite fixings place? Or once under the car, try out a selection of bolts that you may have lying around or check the skandix site as their listings often include dimensions in the part description.

Good thinking Sir!
I need to find a few minutes to look under it, probably going to be tomorrow now, and see what is loose. The car is an 06 reg XC70 D5. Last edited by daveystoat; Aug 31st, 2021 at 17:51. |

Fixings are not special in any way, any normal bolt will do, washer needs to be around 18-20mm or so. I ended up with Alan key headed ones, zinc plated, good only knows what they came off but they look nice lol
Thread doesn't need to be any longer than say 15-20mm or so. Longer is fine you won't foul anything iirc but you will be there ages undoing them in an uncomfortable position Last edited by stuart bowes; Aug 31st, 2021 at 19:05. |

The thread size is 8 X 1.5 as I recall.
I bought stainless steel shorties from the hardware store and used washers I had....real cheap. "Cleaning grounds" is a sound idea (sorry) but I don't know how often it comes up re a car radio. You might want to check that the thing is plugged in completely. If you're unaware of how old your battery is you'd do well to measure it's voltage after an overnight. If your battery reads 12.2V or lower in the morning, put it on a charger and seek battery sales. Also check what kind of battery you have. Common lead/acid batteries can be recharged "carelessly". By that I mean you can clip on the charger and walk away. If the PO installed an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) you can charge them too but cannot walk away as those batteries get funny as they approach full charge. AGM chargers pull back in the home stretch. Common chargers kill AGMs when left on too long. Last edited by Georgeandkira; Sep 1st, 2021 at 12:58. |

I don't know how old the battery is, but I believe it's a lead acid. Put it on charge overnight, made no difference to the error regarding 'Park Assist Service Required', the other random dashboard errors seem to have stopped now though, but no sound from the radio. Don't believe there is an AGM there, |

if you do have an amp it should be under the drivers seat IIRC (someone correct me if wrong..) could have a little poke around under there and make sure everything is plugged in tight?
had any water leaks lately, do you have a sunroof, i think that was a question that was asked recently when I saw someone discussing a similar issue with audio (presumably because it collects in the footwell / under seat) I never did hear the end of that problem, we found a replacement amp on ebay, not sure if he bought one.. then he said sound came back when he unplugged/replugged the existing one, then it went again.. that was the last I recall check amp fuses?
